Title says it all. It is really annoying. I had the original vanilla RCT on disc for about 10 years now and that freeze has never happened until I got the deluxe version. I've tried to reinstall it, even in a different location and the same result occurs. Anything on this?
Also, most of the pre-built coaster names are codes, I think. ( u(078), etc) That's the other problem.

I made a ticket regarding this message. Support sent me steps to take and it worked. Here is the exact, copied steps from the ticket reply.

Hello

1) Please reinstall the game to a simpler path (like: C:\Games).

3) Install the June 2010 DirectX runtime package, then use the DirectX web installer, as your current DirectX may have become corrupt over time.

You can find the ZIP file containing the 2010 package installation files here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=3b170b25-abab-4bc3-ae91-50ceb6d8fa8d

You will have to extract the files into some folder, then open that folder and launch the DXSETUP.exe file in order to proceed with the installation.

Afterwards, download the latest DirectX web installer and use it as well:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

4) Please try to start the game directly from the "RCT.EXE" file found in the game's directory.

5) Please update your graphics device drivers:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

6) Please right-click the game's shortcut, go to Properties -> Compatibility and set different compatibility modes before launching the game again.

7) Please make sure that DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is using its default setting. To do this, follow these steps:
I) Open Menu Start
II) Right click 'Computer' and click 'Properties'
III) Click 'Advanced system settings'
IV) Open tab 'Advanced' and click 'Settings' in 'Performance' section
V) Open tab 'Data Execution Prevention'
VI) Change DEP setting to the first option (Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only)
VII) Confirm with OK.

8) Please try to turn DEP on for all applications and add the game to the exception list. Please remember to turn DEP to defaults afterwards.

It worked for me without having to reinstall my video drivers.
You sir are a Saint.
I tried everything in these steps but it stills freezes when I go to save a game.

UPDATE: I just changed the compatibility again to windows 95 and now it seems to work. I can't change the name of my save game file but that's the least of my worries.

UPDATE #2: Okay now it won't load the saved game. It freezes yet again. -sigh- With this many problems the game outta be free... :-/

Please write to our Support department about this issue and make sure to include your DxDiag. Thanks :D
I found a pretty easy solution for myself: I just pause the game, save and then continue playing. Works like a charm for me. All the other methods didn't do anything for me.
Now its just crashing like it used to. Can't you just write a patch to fix this issue? It's really a game breaker.

Agreed. that sounds like way more trouble than its worth, i didn't have any problems with the first game i bought off of here, i shoulden't have to go through all of that just to make a game work
I'm having the same problem. The game freezes whenever I try to save the game.
Same problem for me too.
It froze up when I first launched the game too. I had to re download it with their downloader program for it to work.
That worked but now it freezes when I try to save.
Same problem for me, on RollerCoaster Tycoon 1. It really sucks.

Also, the "u(138)" rollercoaster naming problem exists here as well.

Same, 90% of the coaster names are missing.
