The games starts and run just fine, but I cannot control the character. As soon as I start the game my character only goes right and no other directions work. I can move the mouse but I cannot click on anything and ESC does not work either.

ok call me stupid, but i found the file and if its not supposed to be auto, what should i change it to?
one other question. i understand its a very old game so i expect the controls to be clunky and take a little getting used to. but any advice on how to get my control pad to work would be appreciated, and any thips or tricks to make controling the character a little easier would be greatly appreciated

Can I get a clarification on this topic please. I found the .conf file in question but i`m struggling to find the controller setting.
I am having the same issues as above as the main character is occasionally moving around without my input !

Could you post the contents of the config file here? I don't own the game but I'd be happy to look for you.

You need to find the
[joystick]
section of the config file and change the line
joysticktype=auto
to
joysticktype=none

It's easier than my current way of doing it - plugging the joystick on / off depending on the game I'm playing :)

Thanks to eckertt001! It's been a while since I had to edit a config file manually to get a game to run. Of course, 5 minutes later an eagle tore my eye out...

This helped, but somehow the cursor still seems hell bent on going in the bottom right corner of the screen every 20 seconds or so...

I have a problem.
When i have my controller not plugged in or the .conf file changed (joysticktype to none) the game just closes after a few seconds
