Is there a fix to it?

... Is it just doomed to be stuck this way?

I've seen spike strip freezing, along other ways of getting frozen...

There's also run-killer crashes :/

I've never seen those popups. Yes, the game frequently crashes on Linux. I've seen others report this, and I had to stop playing the game because of it.
