The combat in Risen 1 feels pretty atrocious from the get-go. I am only about 30 minutes in so the worst enemies I have fought are a couple of wolves at a time. It seems like the only thing every enemy knows how to do is rush up, attack a time or two or three, then jump back. And damn they are good at jumping back. I guess every species has their fencing school.

I saw one of the two wolves circle around, and I thought that was pretty clever. It turned out the AI only uses one to attack at a time. The other just kind of sat there and snarled. They did tag team occasionally, and the attacking wolf changed, but otherwise the only thing they had going for them was how much damage they did, which I guess is realistic.

Maybe it's because it's still very early, and the enemy AI will get better over time. But if I don't rant a bit on this, I can't get zen enough to keep going. I do hope combat doesn't grow simply by adding more moves to the combo, likeI think I heard in a review. If combat simply grows to 5, 6, 7 move combos, I don't think I can keep going.

[I forgot to mention, I did beat the wolves. No damage. But it took a long time waiting for the timing to be right. That's part of the frustration that made me want to rant. Not challenging. Just disrespectful of my time.]
