When I came to GoG yesterday there where a few updates for games, one of those was for Risen but on downloading I noticed the version number was the same as what I already had, and there is nothing here
regarding an update, I assume it was an error of some sort ?

Another game that said new, cannot recall what it was now was the same on download it was the same version.

Thanks.

The game itself wasn't updated, the extra content was. FLAC version of the soundtrack was added.

If you look at the game in your library to get the details page, then usually there will be a "NEW" label next to the specific thing that got updated (whether it was the installer or one of the extras).

And if you already have the game and extras downloaded from before, if you click to download the game and extras again to the same folder, the GOG downloader will recognize which ones are actually new and only download the new ones.
