any help with what this error means and how to get it to go away?

Few months ago, i could play the game just fine, but now that i wanted to play it again yesterday, i could not because of a error i don't recognize nor know what to do against..

The error indicates that the game is trying to start at a resolution that the monitor does not support. Usually this happens when the game has already been started at least once with a different screen attached to the PC.
Try deleting the file "ConfigUser.xml" which should be in game folder or here - C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Risen\.

The same problem! Help me guys!!
I purchased Risen 1 and tried to play the game but I received Engine fatal error and got the blue screen. I tried the solution remove ConfigUser.xml but did not fix the problem. I also tried set resolution to "fasle" and not "true" as provided by steam but no fix. I tried a couple of Verify/Repair and Re-install but the problem persists. Please provide direction since "The Problem" - is not solved.

Hi!
If the problem comes from an SDK issue (fatal error with the PhysX SDK), the same thing happened to me. I tried deleting the configuser file, but realised that clearly wasn't the same problem. After a little bit of digging, I found out that PhysX wasn't installed on my computer. Just downloading it and installing it solved the problem for me :)

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/physx/9_13_1220/physx-9-13-1220-driver/

This is the up to date driver. Hope it works!

i have the same problem
What exactly is your engine error saying?
I just had an error in the physics module which was solved by simply installing the latest NVidia PhysX driver (https://www.nvidia.com/de-de/drivers/physx/physx-9-19-0218-driver/) but that was already suggested in the thread by Hamtargon.
So, fatal engine error could mean anything. Before you try every "fix" you find in the web make sure you know what you're looking for.

I had the same problem, but in my case, it was a new video card, the fatal error message was a little different. HOWEVER, the solution was the same. That "ConfigUser.xml" file sure plays (pun inteneded) a big role in this game!
Just got a new PC with Radeon Card and got the SDK Error - thought I was out of luck - Installed the driver suggested by Hamtargon and it fired off just fine. Thanks for the pointer.
