Anyone know how the multiplayer is going to work? Will the Steam version with its automatic updating mean that Steam players won't be able to play with non-Steam players when Steam gets an update that puts it ahead in version number than GOG for instance? For that matter, will the Steam version be able to play with non-Steam versions at all?

In the official forums, I remember reading that it didn't matter where you bought it, we could play with everyone.
Yep, and you can find out lots more here:

Is there gonna be a cdkey check or something? If it doesn't have any protection, multiplayer will be filled with hacker kids. And if there is a cdkey/account system, how is it gonna work on GOG version?

"DRM Free" doesn't mean "lack of anti-cheat protection".
But if there is no key check, hack protection won't do much. Banned kid will come back right away.

it's possible to lock out the ip or mac adress of a user's computer. there are several solutions for that.
Most connections aren't static so banning IP is useless, changing MAC id is easy as well.

BTW I got the answer from devs here, http://www.interceptor-entertainment.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=131&t=2959&p=18228#p18228

There will be keys, even on GOG version.
key is no problem, key is still no drm. that's okay. :D
Well I wouldn't buy if it didn't have a key system, so it's nice :)
They will have something like Battle.net. ROTT.net (I think, maybe i remembered wront). Basically, everyone will be able to play with everyone else, doesn't matter where you're buying the game.
Anyone know how to adjust the account information we entered for multiplayer? I entered the wrong email address.

How is a key to allow multiplayer not DRM?

drm means being forced to be online, being forced to install some crap like origin-shit and so on.
one little key is kind and really no problem. and it's needed for anti-cheat-protection in multiplayer.
in summary: drm is absolutly evil. a simple key is not evil, it's just nothing.
