I just recently played all the One Whole Unit of Blood levels and loved every minute. Can someone that has played both RoTT and Blood compare them for me? Is RoTT going to be very much simpler than Blood, about the same, or... other?
Also, how many levels do you get with RoTT? Do you have "mouselook" or even mouse control with RoTT? Appreciate as much comparison as you can muster.
Thanks.
I feel they're completely different games.
ROTT isn't as serious as Blood in terms of presentation; it's very tongue-in-cheek. It also came out four years before Blood, so the FPS mechanics aren't really as great as Blood's. You have infinite ammo and a large assortment of weaponry (Pistols, machine gun, tons of rocket launchers.)
Level design is much simpler than Blood, and there's a TON of them. Don't know a specific number, but there's tons of levels.
With the WinROTT source port, mouselook becomes available, but I don't recommend it. It works better without it.
Try out the shareware episode.
Well, blood is very tongue-in-cheek too, but yes, ROTT doesnt take itself serious at all. I dont think there's infinite ammo without cheats, the weapons are very awesome though. : )
There are as vagabond said tons of levels, there's a random level generator if you want to make some levels yourself too. ; ) Rott is more like a 2d sidescroller in 3d than a regular fps game.
Well Rott was tom halls attempt to build a game closer to his vision for doom and ended up being a dark comic shooter. it implemented some of the same features as build but hall stuck with the wolfenstine 3d code base and had his team re code it (the apogee team got beta doom code to replace some of the subsystems) as a protected mode game. it retains the same fixed 90 degree wall levels but it is really fun to play since it includes a pre quake rocket jump move.
Thanks for the comparisons. I knew it was an older title, but wasn't sure how much you would have to give up. Does the game support the mouse at all? Can you turn left/right with the mouse, or are are going all the way back to arrow-key-only movement? Can you map the movement keys?
The game supports the mouse and you can easily re-map the controls using the setup tool (very much like you would with Blood).
ROTT and Blood are both great games definatly . never played all the way through ROTT yet . have pulled 2 all nighters though with it , enjoyed every minute doin that with both(as well as Postal 2 Complete :D ) .

ROTT came out before blood , so tech is greatly different . in my vote its still worth the money and time to play , extremely fun and ludicrous gibs for the win.
you will enjoy it man for sure.
I heard ROTT was supposed to be some sort of sequel to Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny. No idea if thats true. But it's similar to Wolf 3D in being its similar to a corridor shooter. Blood uses the Duke 3D engine I believe. So I guess it depends which you like better.

Rise of the Triad was originally going to be a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D but for some reason it couldn't officially be a sequel. So, call it a spiritual sequel, but it is a game in its own right. :)

this is the original planning document for ROTT. ID killed the connection to Wolf 3D by canceling the contract that allowed Apogee to market a new game with the brand.
Both game have splatter humour and lots of fun, quirky weapons. ROTT has a much better soundtrack and crazier multiplayer (don't count on getting the multiplayer to work between two modern computers in either of those two games, though).

Blood has better level design and a better game engine. Both games are worth playing once in a while for a blast, but I suspect you're not going to play through all episodes and add-ons of either of the two games.
