Just some sneaky tricks to help with games. If you have good tactics, feel free to add them in.

1) When making corridors, make it 1 space wide and at corners leave a 3 x 3 space. When bugs attack or if someone breaks in, you position 3 melee fighters in front and 3 shooters behind. Meet them at the the choke point where the 1 space meets the 3. You will be fighting 6 against 1, and they will be stuck fighting you one at a time.
2) Kill mazes which enter into your base are a great way to win serious battles. Doors alternating with corridors allow you to place traps every two spaces through the maze. An IED is also a nice trick, especially flammable with some gasoline in a storage space beside.
3) Berserk or Berserk Pulse are the best psychic powers you can get for beating attackers. They even work on most mechanoids. If you are hitting with mortars, using Berserk to get them fighting each-other will keep them in place to bombard with high-explosives.
4) Giving Hand Talons to your ranged fighters is a great backup when they do get stuck in close combat.
5) If you have a character with Jogger or Fast Walker, try to get them the Very Fast Runner gene and Bionic or Archotech Legs. Then give them a good Charge Rifle and you can run ahead of enemies, kiting and sniping. Careful fighting will let them take out a whole base on their own.
6) If you can get the No Sleep gene, give it to a constructor or crafter. Be aware this will end their ability to be romantic.
7) Circadian Assistants are even better with the Low Sleep gene and Trait. All three are amazing.
8) Reprocessor Stomachs give you more room for gene modification, reducing hunger and being great even without gene modification.
9) Put Coagulators and Healing Enhancers on Hussars and watch their wounds vanish in no time.
10) When doing gene modification, be aware that Genies, Highmates, Hussars and Sanuophages get their abilities from Xenogenes, and so they will lose all their inbuilt buffs if you give them new genes. It's weird!
11) If you are gene farming, NEVER throw away Awful or Poor genes. They are great for min/maxing characters. Store them in a gene bank!
12) Use the Awful Shooting and Nearsighted Gene on melee fighters. More metabolism for good fighting genes, like Strong Melee Damage and Robust.
13) Enemies generally follow the closest fighter. Use fast fighters to lead melee enemies in a circle and meanwhile shoot them with allies, or lead them into traps.
14) Mountain regions are excellent for mineral resources and steel. A great location for a starting base.
15) Rainforests recover their timber quickly. Cut it all down and stock up! You can make a surprising amount of money building furniture or recurve bows to sell, or just sell the timber itself in a pinch. It adds up!
16) If you are using Impids, never go anywhere without medicine, and try to get a good doctor as soon as possible. Their weak immunity means a scratch from a rat that gets infected can quickly kill them.
17) Ally with as many factions as you can, then begin calling in caravans. If you are building up trade goods, you can be calling in a new caravan about once every 2 days and just cycling through them. Give gifts occasionally to keep them friendly.
18) Never fight Scythers in close combat if you can possibly avoid it. They remain a dangerous enemy all through the game, and can maul even skilled melee fighters and permanently damage them.
19) Mechhive turrets will not shoot through smoke. Use smoke to screen your fighters, and shoot through it with grenades or repeating weapon.
20) Elephants are amazing if you can tame a few. Great for hauling, speeding caravans, and melee fighting in a pinch. If you get a few breeding pairs you can really go to town. Take male elephants on caravans (since females might be pregnant) and sell new Elephants as needed.
