A friend gave me the offline installer to test this version and RE 2. Well, I had this same error on two machines, one uses Windows 7 and the other uses Windows 10.

If these things help...

The second link has nothing to do with RE, but notice that the error is the same! And according to the OP, reinstalling was the solution. However, it didn't work for me in RE 1, and strangely, RE 2 starts without an error, but I get a black screen with sound in the FMVs. There was a time when I had this "Win32" error, I was trying to install a game whose installer was 16 bits, on a 64 bit machine. I think GOG messed up the files for RE 1 and to some extent 2.

You didn't ask for a tip but I'll give you one: Ask for a refund, and do yourself a favor, get the MediaKite version somewhere and use this patch on it: https://classicrebirth.com/index.php/downloads/resident-evil-classic-rebirth/

It works on Windows 7, 8/8.1, 10 and 11.

I have the same error with RE1 but RE2 works fine, including FMVs. OS is Win7 x64. None of the hotfixes fixed this.
I have posted a solution for this problem there: https://www.gog.com/forum/resident_evil_series/not_a_valid_win32_application/post6

The GOG releases were optimized for Windows 10 and 11. Why are you using Windows 7 in 2024?

They are not. Victims of marketing are always so hilarious. LOL

I'm also curious, are you using Windows 7 on a computer disconnected from the internet solely dedicated to play offline games? If so, cool!

One with DOS, one with Windows 98. one with Windows 7. A "big" PC for modern resource-hungry games as well and a silent laptop dedicated to the internet browsing. Does that answer your question?

Follow-Up question: Why?

Because I can see the difference. There are people who can not. It's like 'tone deaf'. And there are people, as well, who never saw how old games properly behave on the authentic hardware. But I remember. This is good old games realm.
