F9? Thats not intuitive. I didn't see any hints to use that button.

I used win + d to got to desktop and then used task manager to close the program.

F9 to quit to the main menu, and F9 again to quit to desktop

It's still not an "exit" option, but you can just press Alt+F4, just like any other Windows app. It's simpler than the method you describe, at least.

It isn't intuitive. But then, it's the way to quit the game, so...

Games came with (wait for it) manuals (!) back in the days.
