Ok, so when I bought this game; I thought it was really cool they gave you mp3's of the soundtrack...because that was one of the reasons I always loved the game..it was one of the reasons I bought the game back in the late 90's.
But has anyone ever figured out the mp3s you can get from GOG are basically redundant?
If you've read the issues about the music volume...surely you're seen references to mounting an ISO. But what purpose does it serve? It's not a copy-protection ordeal...that won't work with ISO emulation. And I thought it was quite interesting you had to adjust a mixer in DosBOX that...going by the old SB mixer convention...was the analog input for the CD-Rom drive.
Well...turns out the ISO file DosBOX mounts is actually just the audio-CD portion of the original disc. I got really curious when I was solving the volume issue on my own about just what was going on with this .inst file. I renamed it to ISO and attempted to look at it. Well..my programs failed..because they're for data ISOs. The INST file is actually just an audio CD image.
Make a copy, rename to .iso; mount it in your OS using some kind of image mounting software. It's an audio CD. Boot a ripping program, point it to your virturaldrive; and you can rip the entire soundtrack off the disc...which is the same linear PCM data you'd get off the actual game disc. Now you've got the soundtrack in an uncompressed format.
Might be the same for Rides Again...haven't gotten around to testing that.
