Trying to run Red Faction. Clicking on "Play" in the Red Faction Launcher or by double-clicking RF.exe does absolutely nothing other than freeze either the launcher or the file-manager.

I had to install the unofficial "Pure Faction" patch that updates the game to work in widescreen as well as make it run on modern systems. There's another source port for Red Faction as well called Dash Faction which is recommended on the Pure Faction website. I haven't used Dash Faction though.

Pure Faction includes it's own executable and launcher which I use to run a nohud mod I made for Red Faction.

Just do a google search for "Pure Faction".

It should be the first result.

Pure Faction has been deprecated and no further updates are planned. Furthermore, Pure Faction doesn't fix near as many issues as Dash Faction and suffers from some additional compatibility issues and bugs that Dash Faction does not.

You should be using Dash Faction if you're looking for added features, fixed bugs, and the best play experience possible. Technically, Pure Faction _may_ still work for you, but you're going to run into issues using it that are not present when using Dash Faction.

The current version of Dash Faction is v1.4.1. You can find installation instructions (and additional help with Red Faction) at the Red Faction series help site:

Just FYI, I've since tried to get Dash Faction to work and had nothing but problems. It wouldn't let me select my mod in the launcher menu (not sure why). It worked fine with Pure Faction.

Ultimately though, I couldn't even get Dash Faction to run at all. It kept telling me I had the wrong version of rf.exe. I have it on disc and applied the official patches, so not sure why it's complaining.

That being said, if you have the disc version and apply the official patches, it should work - that's the version it requires. If you're using the GoG or Steam version, there's an additional step required - though the new version of Dash (due out in the very near future) will automatically handle all of that for you.

As for not allowing you to select your mod, I expect this is also related to the .exe issue you're having. Please join the RF community Discord (http:// redfaction.chat) and we will get this all fixed up for you :)

PS. Also, be sure to follow the installation instructions for Dash Faction (available in the quick start guide on http:// redfaction.help) - they will will walk you through getting the correct version of rf.exe.
