Hey all,
This thread is just for clarifying the Red Faction series timeline and identify any retcons that may have occurred.
To be clear, I have yet to get to Red Faction: Guerrilla, I have completed Red Faction and I am now playing Red Faction 2.
I have checked the first game's official material inside out: manual, in-game text and dialogue, trailer and box art - nowhere does it state a date for the miners' revolution on Mars.
Red Faction 2 does not highlight a date - the devil is in the details: in the main menu, if you go to 'Extras' -> 'Gallery' -> 'Squad' you will see the processing dates for each nano-augmented agent (*ahem*): the year is 2161.
Probably a few years have past since Chancellor Sopot ordered the purge, but in any case - we are not in the 21st century.
We understand the events of Red Faction happened before Red Faction 2 but no idea how much time passed between the nanotechnology development on Mars and its retrieval by the Commonwealth.
But then online - Wikipedia etc. - there are claims both games take place in the late 21st century.
This has got to be the result of a retcon due to Red Faction: Guerrilla. Could someone confirm this?
Anyway, so far I am pleasantly surprised by Red Faction 2.
EDIT: just re-reading the manual for Red Faction 2, we find that the gunship is an upgrade compared to "its predecessor from 5 years ago". Assuming that means 5 years before the main story of Red Faction 2, that would mean the original game took place only a few short years before the nanotech fell into the hands of Sopot, with the surviving super soldier squad's mission you get to play happening anywhere between months to a couple or so years after the creation of the nano-augmented soldiers.
FINAL EDIT: OK I just realised that the intro cinematic for Red Faction 2 actually starts by displaying "2 years later" (after prologue) so now we know: the Commonwealth gets its hands on the nanotechnology in 2161, so the main events of the game take place in 2163, and we know (see previous paragraph) that is five years after the miners' rebellion on Mars - so Red Faction takes place in 2158. This makes it clear that if different dates for these games have since been provided, they are retcons - probably brought by Red Faction: Guerrilla.
