After wondering about the sudden breaks in the storyline I realized that no movies were played between the chapters. Trying to play the movies at the extras menu was unsuccessful, too (short black screen).

I'm running RF2 (and RF beforehand) on Win 10 computer with a nVidia graphics card and am using 1600 x 1200 on my 16:10 display to avoid stretched images.
Maybe I'm missing some kind of codec?

I have the same problem. Didn't find the ultimate solution yet. But the movies are located in the "Red Faction II / pc_media / Movies" subfolder (a set of .bik files) and one can play them using some third party media player like VLC.
