It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).

I had many versions of GOG's RB3D running with most of the UOPs that are out there, on a Vista 64 Windows machine.
My problem/question is I got a new computer running 8.1 and I can't get any of the old UOPs to install. It seems 8.1 for some reason won't allow the UOPs to overwrite the files they need to in order to install.

RB3D runs fine in glide mode but I can't get any of the upgraded terrains, planes, special effects and sounds.

So the question is it possible to add UOPs with 8.1, and if so how?

(yes I know CM 11 was never updated for 64 bit so that one I never got to run on Vista. I'm asking here about the UOPs)
I do not have Win 8.1, and the only UoP I really have dealt with was Helton's Revenge of the Jastas.

The UoPs however are just files and folders that replace the original game files. When I have had this problem for other games, what i have done is unZipped/install the files in a completely different folder, and then just did a copy and paste into the game folder I wish to play the modded game from.

If that fails, check to see if you need Administrator Rights to copy the UoP files over (Win 8.1 is a Windows OS after all) or check to see if the RB3D game files are not set to "Read Only" in the properties. If they are read only, you cant write over them

Good luck

Thanks for the reply.

Yes that is the way I have always done it from day one with RB way back when.
This technique just doesn't seem to work with Windows 8.1. At lest for me it doesn't. I have all the ROTJ files and when I tried to copy them I was told it couldn't be done. Operation not allowed! Thought someone might point out a technique I didn't know about.

I have Promised Land on CD and I did get that to apply. It has a self installer. Worked fine....then the next time I booted the game it had gone back to the original files. I don't have a clue what is up with that but I'm sure it has something to do with the way Windows 8.1. "thinks" and operates.

Oh well. I'm well into a campaign with the basic game and I'm enjoying it as much as I did back in the 90s.
I did get Beery's earliest patch to load by dragging the files into the matching folders. For some reason 8.1 didn't object to these.

I also added his special effects patch.

No need to try his Super patch because that will not work without CM10/11. Anyway that patch is for making time period changes among squadrons and that I can live without.

So....I now have better clouds, improved sounds , and special effects as flame, explosion and so forth. Also have some improved paint schemes for the planes.

All in all I am happy with the game now.

Glad to hear that you have it working enough to be happy. The " Operation not allowed! " really sounds like either an administration setting, or a security setting.

It could also be where the game folders are at. I remember talk anout that some games placed in the default "Program Files" folder could not be modded, but if they had instead been installed in another named folder, such as C Drive/Games/RB3D then it was possible to med the games.
