I just downloaded the game, and I'm super-stoked to play, as it is one of my favorites all-time, but it crashes after the opening cinematic! I actually still own a copy of the game on CD, and had the same problem with that. I downloaded this because I thought it would fix the problem.

I'm trying to run it on an Asus netbook with WinXP. I know it's not a gaming system, but it's still WAY more powerful than my old Compaq Presario notebook I used to play this on 10 years ago. I see a lot of people are having this problem, but none of the threads I've found yet have helped. (I tried adding the (x86) and -window into the shortcut, and was told that was an invalid target).

Here's the message I get upon crashing:

"The instruction at '0x2000d96a' referenced memory at '0x082281f8'. The memory could not be "read".

What does that mean? How do I fix it and play my favorite PC game ever??

Haven't heard that problem with Win XP.

One, do you have 32 bit or 64 bit XP?

Two, the (x86) is not something you add to the short cut, it is part of the folder naming in Windows. So you would have a folder named Program Files and a completely different folder named Program Files (x86)

This is used by Windows to differentiate between 32 bit and 64 bit programs. Basically only 64 bit programs go into Program Files So by adding (x86) into the short cut will create the "invalid target" message for either you do not have a Program Files (x86) folder, or RB3D was not installed in there, therefore an "invalid target."

Have you tried the shortcut with just adding the -window ? Remember there is a space in front of the "-" The reason I ask is you wrote it in a way that makes me think you did "-window' and "(x86)" at the same time.

You do not need to install the game in Program Files (x86) . It can be installed in something as simple as: C:\Games\RedBaron3D\

Thank you so much, I did not know that. I have 32 bit Windows, and adding just "-window" got me past the crash.

At first, the menu wouldn't read any of my clicks, but that problem seems to have fixed itself. I jumped into a fly-now mode, just to test things out, but found myself only looking at about 1/4 of the screen (my plane, in 3rd person view, was in roughly the lower-right corner of the screen). After putting in one of the glide downloads, that seems to be better now. However, I'm running around 3-4fps, which is unusable. Any thoughts? This is a problem I had 10 years ago, but feel I shouldn't be having now.

Okay, I figured it out, after finding another post that addressed the issue. Apparently I just had to set the speed using the setspeed.exe file in the Red Baron 3d folder. Getting 20-30 fps after turning that up to 100%.
