Hello all,
After over 10 year hiatus, I finally get back to my favorite sim of all time, the RB3D. I bought the game at GOC last week and downloaded all the needed patches such as First Aid Kit and 1078 patch. I have Windows XP and for the life of me, I cannot get the game to run in its glory. That means the game runs with very substandard graphics. I load and reload the 1078.exe but still get the original version. I also have great difficulty install the First Aid Kit because it keeps telling me to "install RB3D then run the Wizard from RB3D folder" after I unzip everything. PLEASE HELP ME TO GET THIS GAME RUNNING and I thank you for all your help! BTW, the Glide option is greyed out so I wonder if this could be the problem? DCP

The GOG version already includes the 1078 patch included.
With the First Aid Kit, you should be able to get a Glide Wrapper, but it has been many years since I have needed to use it. So, when you are speaking of "very substandard graphics," you mean while playing Glide mode, not Direct Draw or Windowed mode?
When you start your mission at an airfield (Campaign Mode), if the ground is made of squares with crisp edges, you are in Direct Draw Mode.
Just in case its been too long: You can select which graphics mode by selecting Preferences, then selecting Graphic Setting, the Graphic Options. Pick your graphics mode under Graphics and Resolution right under that. There are also sliders for adjusting graphic details (move them all the way to the right), and check boxes for other details (Shadows=On, Props=On -there can be a FPS hit, Combat Detail=Detailed, Max Detail=On, Pixel Size=Small, Terrain Textures=Smooth, Aircraft Textures=Custom, and Clouds=On).
The game ships with the stock terrain that originally came with the game. However there are numerous mods now that improve all graphics of terrain and planes.
For terrain, there are three.
OTE or On The Edge. Hard to find but is out there.Summer and winter is very good, Fall for me is horrible, but some like it.
PL1 or Promised Land 1 by Kessler. The best one out there, especially the one modded by Gump. the version entitled PL1va by Kessler includes sounds (most I like, a few I really hate) and graphics for buildings. PL1va is set up that you have to use all of its vol files or game will crash. Gump's version is terrain only, set it up so each vol file is a separate entity so game will not crash if you change one vol file out for a completely different vol file for that season. Gump's also change one tile that had a large yellow field in it, which created a noticeable checkerboard look to the terrain for Spring and Summer. Biggest problems with PL1 is that it is graphics intensive (heavy hit on FPS) and has a non-stock palette that causes the game on Win7 to crash after finishing the mission, with keeps one from advancing in a SP Campaign.
PL2 or Promised Land 2. This is the one I use (since I am on Win7, if not I would be swapping between PL1-Gumps and PL2). Very nice Graphics, but colors are a bit intense. Example, the Spring/Summer terrain is very green, which I see in the hills where I live for about three to five weeks in April-May, but not all Spring nor Summer long. Nice thing about PL2 is that it uses the stock color palette, so it has no conflict with Win7.

About Multi-Player and the GOG version. GOG modified the exe's so one does not get asked to put in the CD. Problem is most servers online run a security program and notice the fact and kick those using the GOG version. The fix is replace Baronmmp.exe with a stock 1078 version that does not include the CD fix. To play click the upper right cross six times in the Insert CD Prompt Window. I have a 1078 patched stock Baronmmp.exe uploaded in the same folder as the terrain from my personal game that came from my RB3D CD.

Thank you for your answer and I hope you can help me on this issue. When I start the game, the graphic is poor meaning "squarish" mountains and "lego" style planes. I maximize all the graphics to no avail. Also the game runs pretty choppy. I rememberd that if the 1078 patch works, then at the start I should see the 1.0.7.8 on the right hand corner in which I do not see it now on my new computer. Therefore I think the 1078 patch does not get incorporated and that is why the graphics look poor, I tried switching to Window and the graphics is the same. The option of Glide is greyed out and cannot be selected. Is it possible for me to contact you on the phone so we can work this out while I am at the PC? Of course I will pay you for your time. If the Glide option is greyed out, you then need either a Glide Wrapper or a VooDoo Video Card. And since Voodoos have not been made for about ten years, the Glide Wrapper is your best bet.

I have four Glide Wrappers there. Try the one I have named CJGlideWrapper. This is the easiest one to use as everything is preset. put it in your game folder, default location would be: C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Red Baron Pack\Red Baron 3D. Put the wrapper in the Red Baron 3D folder, start the game and see if you can select Glide.

Have you tried the nglide wrapper? http://www.zeus-software.com/galleries/nglide
You can also try other glide demos with this wrapper to see if they work....
and are directx drivers and VIDEO up to date? Do other programs work in higher than 800x600?

I gave up on my HP so I went out and bought the new PC hoping it will work with RB3D. It is the Gateway FX with i7 chip and ATI Radeo 5770 video card. I downloaded RB3D with all the patches and this time, the game won't even load. I have Windows 7 and am I SOL? Help!!! DP

I finally got the game to run but with many problems, I installed the FCJ, Hell Angels and PL2 after getting RB to run in Glide mode. I used the voodoo 1.5 beta patch. At 1600x1200 resolution, I only got 10 FPS (alternate F method). I minimize all details and still got 12 PFS. As such it is unplayable. Can anyone advise the right way to get good frame rate with these patches added? Many people have FPS in the hunderds and that means something is not right with my set up. There are so many patches online and I am at loss on what to do next. DP

Just read your emails.
If you added Full Covered Jacket mod the n the Hells Angels mod, you will most likely have problems. They are two very distinct mods and can therefore have serious conflicts. For example FCJ modifies file A, but HA needs the stock version of File A.
If you have a clean, stock install of RB3d, does it run? Then add the Glide Wrapper of your choice and check to see if it runs still, and at decent fps. With stock terrain and your new computer, it should run very well, maybe even too fast. NOW make copies of the game folder. Personally I have two all stock copies of the RB3d game on my computer.
Now, for FCJ, it is a stand alone mod, it includes PL1 (Promise Land 1) terrain. Test it and see if it runs, FPS should be lower, but hopefully not non-existent.
Now, if the game runs smoothly, but crashes when you exit, there is a problem with the PL1 Terrain (I have this problem, I think it has to do with PL1's custom color palette). You can add another terrain but it is best to first remove PL1.
PL1 consists of 5 'vol' files Four of the files are located in the 3dpatch folder which can be found in the data folder (RB3DGameFolder->/Data/3dpatch) The four folders are : 3dfall.vol, 3dpatch.vol, 3dspring.vol, & 3dwinter.vol.) I would create a folder entitled PL1 and cut the files and paste them into that folder. The fifth file is in the Data folder and it is called lowres.vol, you need to remove the lowres.vol file also, though I would suggest you cut and paste so you can get it back. The way PL1 was built, the maker scattered the files across the vol files, so by removing just one, you can crash the game.
Now, add the PL2 files to the 3dpatch folder. PL2 has only three files, for 3dpatch.vol doubles for both Spring and Summer.
For Hells Angels, install it into one of your other copies of RB3d. HA I believe does not have terrain included, so add PL2 or any other terrain package that takes your fancy.

You definitely should be getting better fps than what you are. I'm assuming you have the latest directx update installed: http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/4/A/84A35BF1-DAFE-4AE8-82AF-AD2AE20B6B14/directx_Jun2010_redist.exe and that you have the latest ati video driver installed: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-64bit For glide, try my preconfigured dll for best results: http://www.sendspace.com/file/3kjjrj Make sure to update directx, and the video driver, don't use the driver that came on the disk with your video card, it is probably out of date. Try these things and see, if you are still having problems, then we'll have to try some other things.

Thank you for your help and despite my best efforts, I mustered to get to 13 PFS. Still too choppy to play. Also, when I downloaded the last link, my PC now is bombarded witha bunch pop up ads that are really bothersome. May you check to make sure it isthe right link? Thanks so much! DP
