I was excited to finally get into RB3D, thanks to GOG, because I loved the original Red Baron. I figured out Dgvoodoo and got that working with the stock game but was dismayed by the poor performance. I then installed Revenge of the Jastas and was wowed by great performance in Fly Now and much better graphics. Then I started a campaign and ran into the "no enemy planes" problem. I was literally flying mission after mission on autopilot without a single enemy encounter. Their forums confirm that this was a problem as far back as 2008 with no fix. Deleting the RB3D folder and reinstalling the game and the mod actually caused a new problem, crashes every time I clicked "campaign" no matter what I tried.
Annoyed, I installed Hells Angels and its most recent patch after a clean reinstall of RB3D. It crashes every time I click "campaign" without fail. Nothing seems to fix it. The designer claims on his website that this has something to do with the intro videos, which never played for me in any case with this GOG version, and recommends copying over the videos from the CD to the game folder, which I can't do as I don't have the CD. If it helps I'm running Win 7 x64 and using dgvoodoo 1.52 as my glide wrapper. Any suggestions or help? Thanks in advance.

However, I have no idea if that will help with mods.

The GOG version of the game ships with setspeed to artificially slow the game down. This is fine for DirectDraw mode, but no good when you have a Glide emulator - it slows everything down - you need to open up setspeed and ramp the speed back up to close to 100%. There are other glide emulators you can try other glide wrappers: CamelJockey's, dgvoodoo 1.4, openglide, zeckensack's glide (the one GOG uses for its other games), and nglide. They have different tradeoffs between graphical performance and speed. Wailwulf posted links to several wrappers in several posts:

The GOG version does come with all the videos. You can find them in /Data => /Videos. There are two AVI videos (Intro.avi & Sierra.avi) and numerous videos with the flc extension.

If I actually click on Baron.exe, my videos do not play either, but I don't do that. I use GabiLaser's Reload utility, which forces the game to play the videos (this was his way to get around the "There is no CD in the Drive" message).

Reload also has numerous other, very cool options to make the game more fun, like a constant wind so if you are not careful, you can get blown across the lines during a dogfight, amongst many others.

For RotJ, did you install all 14 files? or just the original 10? There were some patched updates that I have hosted. If You only did the original 10, the other four might help. They can be found here:

But I would first check the video folder to see if the files I mention are there (they should be, and if so, try Reload by GabiLaser to get the intro movies to play.

Even with the ReLoad utility my intro.avi video didn't play (only the Sierra.avi played) until I downloaded the video codec linked to by Wulfc in the thread linked to above, because I don't think Win7 comes standard with that codec anymore. Reading up on it seems to indicate it was always a rare codec to begin with.

However, I believe you're right that ReLoad is necessary to play the videos even once codec is installed (at least after the first time the program is run) - and it is good to use ReLoad for all the other reasons you mentioned (including in other threads).

Once you find iv5setup.exe in the links above, you can follow these directions to get the intro video working:

iv5setup installs video codecs. Of particular interest to Red Baron 3D is the iv4 codecs and associated programs as it plays the intro movie. Use custom install and only install iv4 stuff - the iv3 and iv5 codecs are not necessary and DO NOT attempt to install the iv5 plugin as the installer will endlessly search for Netscape (may not be a problem if you have Netscape or it finds another browser it feels is compatible).

Wailwulf though would know far better than I about bugs and state of the various mods. So I'll leave any further questions in his capable hands. ;)

@Wailwulf: If you can comment, I was just curious about the state of the Redux project. How's the code rewrite coming? I know I could pop over to your forums over at the official site, but I thought since you were here ... :) Anyway, best of luck! - it's an exciting project!

When it comes to mods for RB3D it is RotJ that I know best.

As to Redux, my end is pretty slow as I know nothing about programming and coding. I did some great things that mad the possibilities of modding the game as is beyond what had been seen before, but right now that is on hold as coding for a new graphics engine can make it all null and void, maybe.

As to the intro movies, they are just AVI's, it is the in game/in-menu movies that require the codec. Windows Media Player can play AVI movies and most games use AVI movies, so can't see how that would effect RB3D. But who knows, I really do not understand computers, I just hit them with a sledgehammer until it breaks or does what I want :)

Unfortunately I couldn't get the intro movie to play under any kind of player without the iv4 codec - I was under the same impression you were about avi files, but apparently not for this particular avi movie - every other film clip in the Red Baron folder played just fine except for that one until I installed the codec and then when I brought up the game the intro played fine which I had never seen before. :/

Good luck with the graphics engine. I'm okay at programming, but know nothing about game programming, so I can only imagine the monumental task you all have at rewriting RB3D's engine - at least you know you and your compatriots will get to work on something interesting (and some probably not so interesting parts + waiting as you are doing now) for the foreseeable future. ;)
