Got the game today, and I'm having a good time so far. But there is something bugging the hell out of me. While in game flying around the music sounds really really bad, like kinda choppy and distorted, almost like static. The moment I go into the pause menu the music sounds perfectly fine. I found that muting the sound effects stops this distortion completely, but I really don't wanna play with no sound effects and I'd like to play with the music. I've used my google fu but I can't seem to find anyone else who's has this problem. Drivers are all up to date and all that good stuff.

Have you tried changing 3D renderer? I know you're having sound problems but it is worth a try. You can change it in the interface that shows up when you launch the game executable.
Switched it from DX11 to openGL, but it doesn't help.
Alright, and how about vertical sync? Perhaps try windowed mode as well.

The reason I'm asking about graphics related troubleshooting is because I feel you're suffering some kind of performance issue that affects music playback.

Also, what kind of sound chipset and drivers are you using? Actually, perhaps you could explain what kind of computer you're using.
did you try somewhat turning down the volume for both music and sound fx? either on startup preferences or ingame in the esc-menu. per default music is near 100%, fx around 75 - maybe this is too high for your machine's general system settings.. check if 50% + 75% will do.
