Just had to tell this somewhere.
I was in about my 8th start of the game, having gotten too big for my britches fairly consistently at around the "move to MK 2 stuff" level in most previous starts.
I usually upgrade in the pattern of Beta Turret, Orzu's Tractor, Mining Laser, MK 1 Defenses, MK 1 drive stuff, MK 1 weapons, with Fault Tracker tossed in the latter portion of that progression somewhere.
In this game, I was about half-way through gaining MK 1 stuff. I had met Trell, but hadn't recovered her first part yet. I had a net worth of maybe 100-150K.
I took a mission for a pick up in a remote place, had a modest fight at the site, and found myself in a asteroid field filled with these huge metallic crystal asteroids unlike others I'd ever encountered. I mean huge like, fills the screen at laser range.
The asteroid field was odd in a couple of other ways. I criss-crossed it several times, and IT HAD NO NAME (hence no easy way to find it again if you ever moved your temporary waypoint). Many of the asteroids were marked mineable upon pulse, but they didn't seem to respond to even 3-4 laser blasts.
Well, I had no other pressing missions, so I decided to experiment. Tried lasing 3-4 different asteroids repeatedly with no result, then I guess one of them was just a little softer than the others. After about 6 blasts, I noticed that the integrity bar of the asteroid had eroded JUST barely enough to see the gap. It took about a dozen laser blasts to finally break up the asteroid. (It took about 15-16 shots to break up most of the others.)
THE FINALE:
That big metal crystal yielded a Face of Gozu, and a pile of Gold Ingots.
EVERY ONE of those huge metal asteroids yielded the same.
Over the course of 3 (carefully marked and nearby landmarks noted) trips, I took a dozen Faces of Gozu out of that cluster, oh, and an equal number of piles of gold.
For about 2 hours I did nothing but mine big asteroids, and carefully shop the loot to encountered traders, Pre-Invasion boom towns, and other optimum points of sale.
Never did find a name for that cluster.
I cleared over 1M Cr from that one cluster.
Shiny.
