Your party is fine. Not all classes are equally good in the computer games which are far more combat centered than P&P campaigns.
Just raise the spells which are useful, which you think you're going to cast.
ok doesnt seem to hard, i've owned the game for some days now, but never dared starting it, only reading about it a lot and creating like one character a day. Soon I might just feel enough secure that I can start:)
Make sure to level up your Magician's Wand to level 4 at an inn. Wand2 is free light, Wand3 is using as rope and Wand4 reduces AP consumed!!!

Laidbackgamer: -Paralyse: temporary flesh-to-stone spell. Lasts quite a while, even at lower skill levels has a good chance of working, and if the enemies affected by it are the only ones standing, they count as dead for the combat system purposes. Powerful monsters ("bosses") will more than likely be immune to it, but it's a great crowd-control spell
-Visibili: makes the party invisible. It's more of a utility spell since it allows a player to bypass most random encounters while in a town (although the plot will always find you, so important "random" encounters will ignore the spell). Comes in handy in RoA3, from what I've read.

In the Combat school there's:
-Fulminictus: direct-damage spell. Pretty good all around.
-Ignifaxus: direct-damage spell. It can be boosted when cast. I might be wrong, but each level of boost should equal to an additional 1d6 in damage.
-Plumbumbarum: debuff spell that reduces the attack value of the target. Lasts the entire combat and isn't too expensive to cast, so it's pretty good.

These are the spells I've learned are useful in combat (except Visibili, but it's a Transformation spell, so I've included it). I actually have not played that much, so I have not had a chance to test out the other spell, especially those from the Domination and Dispell schools, so if someone more experienced in the game can chime in it would be great. But the spells above-mentioned did prove valuable in a few difficult fights I faced.
although not quite apparent in the first game, dispell domination/transformation are quite useful in the latter two games as the appearance of monsters that can dominate you or turn you guys into stone is a lot more common.

the following spells in the domination tree are ones that i have personally found pretty useful
-Ball and Chain: if you're outnumbered and your fighters cant keep the enemies to themselves, endangering your casters, you can use this to immobilize an opponent and pelt him with spells/ranged weapons.
-Somnigravis: effective crowd control. like lightning, it stops your opponent from performing actions.
-Horriphobus: causes enemies to flee, helps end fights quicker and you still get exp for it.

Combat-Terror Power is a great melee buff for your fighters, i recommend getting that as high as you can.

And dont forget to cast odem arcanum/analyze on things you suspect are magical!
I have a few questions concerning RoA1:

1) I have slings, but it says I need rocks. I have no idea how to get rocks.

2) One of my party members lost 1 point in every stat from a curse on the Ghost Ship. Is it possible to get those back?
Is it just me, or are melee fighters useless? Or do they get better later on? I hoped to use my Fighter and Dwarf as tanks and primary damage dealers, but they're pathetic. I've increased their sword and axe skill respectively as much as I could, and bought for them the best equipment at Grollo's in Thorwal. Even so, they fumble their attacks almost as often as they hit, and when they do land a successful hit, they deal only 3-5 damage. By comparison, my two archers deal 7+ damage per successful shot, which is very often. I realise they're only level 3, but they should be able to dish out comparatively more damage to low-level enemies, no? As it stands now, when my casters burn up their mana pool, the fight becomes a bore-fest with someone occasionally hitting for 3 damage. Since most (human) enemies have at least 50 HP, it takes forever to achieve victory.

You can arrange your tanks to take the damage and use your archers and casters to deal high amounts of damage quickly.

However, if you're out of mana and/or arrows, you can always arrange your melee fighter and then hit the computer fight button. That will quickly speed through the the slow melee combat.

My fighters are far from useless, but they do the same as yours. They hit rarely, don't hit super-hard (though I do sometimes get some 10, 11 and 12s in there), but also they don't get hit very often and don't take much damage when they do.

You can get rid of the slings because there are no rocks in the entire trilogy. That's why you can't get slings in part 2 and 3 any more...
There are two ways that might or might not work to get rid of the curese. Reports are kind of rare... You could try to get to the mage school in thorwal. They have an option for breaking curses. But there seems to be a bug. It seems not to work if the cursed character is in the front slot.
Also the spell "Stop Transmutation" might help. But on both solutions the reports are kind of sketchy.
Of course there is always the option to load a savegame before you got cursed. You only get cursed if you fail to pick the lock on one of the chests on the ghost ship.

@charon121
At the beginning they are indeed pathetic. That is because of the ruleset the game uses. The Dark Eye uses active parry. So... First you you have to hit which is usually kind of a 50:50 chance for starting character with decent armor (armor reduces attack/parry). And then the opponent can make a parry check. If he is successful he does get no damage. And if he fails the damage is reduced by his armor.
Ranged attacks have an advantage. Especially early on: You do not have to split your weapon skill points on attack and parry. So the chance to hit is usually higher. But the opponent also cannot parry a ranged attack.
But if you skill your tanks right they will do a lot more damage than the rangers later on. First: When increasing your weapon skill you should only increase the attack and not the parry. Tanks can wear such heavy armor that they do not need the parry. Also you should only raise strength until it is skilled out at 20. You get an additional point of melee damage for every point of strength above a threshold depending on the weapon you use. I think it is 14 for swords. Ranged attacks do not get any bonus damage for high attributes.
And in combat you should try to focus on one enemy. He only gets one try to parry every phase. If you attack him with two characters he can't parry the second one.
Thanks for your tips, Tallima and 19Uhr30!

I've been increasing only attack, not parry, precisely because of their armor. As for focusing on only one enemy, I'll reconsider my strategy, although I use my tanks to distract multiple enemies so that they don't go after my squishier party members. The biggest disadvantage so far is that my archers can only attack horizontally and vertically on the tactical map, but I hear that was fixed in RoA2. Anyway, I hope my fighters will improve in a couple of levels. I've taken a break from this game to play Dishonored, but I'll definitely get back to it.
