I’ve done everything in the swamp that I could do and I’m unable to find the missing solider. I think it has something to do with the barn and the half buried chest that you see in the beginning of the swamp but every time that I’ve walked up to them nothing happens. Is this a bug in the game and if so, is there away around it?

Not sure how much spoiler you want, but the barn and the chest have nothing to do with it afaik (it's been a while).
I think you want to bring a high perception character in the front (not sure, if that's necessary, though), explore the swamp and have a net with you. You actually have to catch the guy and iirc it's more like a random encounter, so you don't necessarily see him in first person view.
Hope that helps as a small pointer.

The encounter should appear somewhere in the northern part of the swamp.
