How do you get a more complete item description in the game. Right now I am trying to figure out what the recorder and quill do. Or is that up to not so simple trial and error?

There are no item descriptions besides "This is a <insert item here>."in the game. In RoA2 you at least get a few weapon and armor stats.
The recorder and quill are useless in RoA1. In RoA2 you can use a quill to copy recipes into a book to save inventory slots. In RoA3 you can also copy other notes.
