I'm guessing you mean the "old fortress" dungeon in Thorwal. To finish the quest, you have to clear the first 2 levels of the dungeon, the rest is optional. To open locked doors you can either use lockpicks, foramen spell or bash them. If you are using an action in which you can't choose a character, the "first" (most left character) will perform the action.

For lockpicking a dwarf excells and is generally the best "dungeon leader".

You can buy them at the better stocked general stores. They look like three little prongs and cost around 9 - 10 Ducats (Goldcoins). They can break with a critical fail throw, always have too. If they are broken, they won't be removed from the inventory but get the status "broken". You can never fix them (like you can fix swords), so throw them away.

The game is old school, but not very tough once you acknowledge all its quirks. Your weapons will brake less, as your skill progresses. In Daspota are some unbrakeable weapons. Especially an orcnose, which my dwarf kept through all three games. Don't bother lugging all the stuff around. money is no real issue. (I once did a playthrough where I sold -all-, and I mean -all- loot, every little beer) It was fun, but senseless.

There are three ingame ways to identify magical weapons (they normally don't look any different in inventory in the first game). 1. Magical spell (odem arcanum, analüs) 2. The prices when you sell those weapons (25 ducats for a sword should make you check that) 2. The magical academy in Thorwal (which is just the odem arcanum spell done by a npc).
