Hello, GOG community! I just purchased the gog version of Rayman 3, however I'm encountering a lingering issue. The game installed smoothly on my system without a hitch, but when I go to launch the game, the ubisoft splash screen appears for half a second before disappearing and showing that "DX8_detect MFC Application has stopped working."

Let me clarify that I have already run the game in compatibility mode for windows xp. I have also uninstalled the game and reinstalled it in XP compatibility mode as well. No dice. I've read through the posts in this forum and one particular user kept posting the same link to a direct x download page in multiple threads. As other OP's have mentioned, this did nothing to help the problem.

I also tried running the DX8_detect file in compatibility mode separately too and that also didn't work. The game refuses to budge without this dx8_detect program launching. Is there any way to bypass the game launching this file? I don't understand why it would be crashing. Moreover, I tried installing the game on a different PC and the same exact problem occurred. I feel like there is something small I might be missing, because other threads show resolutions for other problems and the game runs fine after. So I know this game can and should run on my system.

One other thing I forgot to mention. The ubi.ini file that some threads mention does not exist for me.

Any help would be fantastic. I'll try anything suggested. My PC specs are below:

Windows 7 Ult. 64bit
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
Nvidia GTX 660
8GB RAM

That's indeed a weird problem and I'm not sure what could be causing it. Have you tried running it as administrator? That helps for Rayman M which gives a similar error message about the setup thing.
Regarding your ubi.ini file missing, have you checked both locations? The GOG version is kind of weird in the way that it actually uses 2 ubi.ini files, one for when you run the game as administrator (located at C:\Windows\Ubisoft) and another when not (located at C:\Users\-USERNAME-\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\Ubisoft ). If you can't find the ubi.ini file at any of those locations maybe that is the problem as it should be created after running the setup. Then you could always try creating one and see if it helps.
Another random thing that may help would be to reinstall the game in a different directory, I saw somewhere that it helped with Raman 2 and 3 on Windows 8.
Thanks for the fast response! I have ran the program as administrator and it still throws up the issue. And yup, I checked both locations for the ubi.ini file and it's not there. I do have "view hidden files" checked and briefly unchecked "hide operating system files" just for assurance and it's definitely not on my system. I even ran a file search for it.

I'll try reinstalling the game as administrator to a different directory and see if that helps. If not, if you could provide the data that is in the ubi.ini or a download link to it, that would be great.

I appreciate the help. :)

EDIT: Alright. Still not working. Not sure what would be causing the ubi.ini file to not be made. In the Virtual Store folder, not even the Windows\Ubisoft directories exist. Weird.

Sorry for the double post, but I at least got the game to launch! I found a thread with the ubi.ini contents posted and created the file/directories for both locations and presto! I really don't understand why this wasn't provided when I installed the game (and it's not my system alone since the same thing happened on my laptop with completely different hardware).

Nevertheless, with one problem solved comes another issue. So the game works fine, but controller support is zilch. Now I know there are a ton of threads made for this issue, however none of the fixes have worked for me. The dinput8.dll file that supposedly fixes the problem just causes the game to crash on launch. It gets as far as the in-game loading screen and dumps right back to the desktop.

Maybe the dll file not working has something to do with the install being faulty in the first place. I don't know. I really would prefer not to use xpadder since it doesn't supply true analog axis movements. Beggars can't be choosers so I will resort to it if no fix is available. It just sucks because I owned the old PC version of this game and it never had controller detection problems.

Glad you got the first problem solved at least :)
Regarding the controller problem the dinput8 dll file worked fine for me. For Rayman M I think the game crashed on launch each time I used it and I got it fixed by updating directx. Maybe that will help? Otherwise it could be the same issue that was before, the controller configuration wasn't properly added to the ubi.ini file(s). If that's the case you should add something like:
Camera_VerticalAxis=2
Camera_HorizontalAxis=5

after the videoadjustquality. Though of course that's my controller calibration so it may not work so well with yours, but if that gets the game to work you can try changing the numbers until it feels right.
If none of these work I'm not sure what the problem could be, so you may have to play with the keyboard which can be hard in 3D platform games :( (especially this one which wants you to move the camera with the mouse for some reason).
Alas. I just tried both and it still crashes. Maybe I also have registry keys missing or something.

At this point, I'm pleased to get the game working. Xpadder has proved useful for mapping keyboard/mouse functions to my controller, so I'll worry about native controller support another time. For now, I'll delve into the fun of one of my childhood games.

Thank you so much for your help CarrotMaster!
