Evil Island plays more like pure RPG.
Rage of Mages 1/2 are a bit more like RTS/RPG.

It is quite good. But you should be aware that this game is quite difficult.

I like a challange thanks
EI, though relatively unknown, is easily among the best rpgs of all time. Difficulty-wise it is not really all that difficult, just weird/oldschool.

RoM otoh gets really hard, really fast, punishingly so. It is not an rpg though so be advised.

Strange. I found both RoMs to be relatively easy. But Evil Islands managed to enrage me many times. So many headshots and a lot of crawling...

I picked up all three as part of the bundopolis sale, figured I'd start with RoM1. I'd never played any of these games before but I just love Russian aRPGs so I took a punt.

It's really compelling actually and has hooked me in even though it can be a little slow paced. I'm only a few missions in and you do have to play cautiously - saving often is important since there is usually an insta-fail condition on your NPC companions and mages can be pretty soft vs goblins. Also sending the right person in to unexplored areas seems important - eg. have your mage hang back while the fighter goes on ahead, soften them up and fall back to within the mage's staff projectile range to finish them off.

Another fun thing is that monsters/NPCs seem to die in multiple stages - falling over incapacitated and then turning to skeletons when hit a few more times. It's a slightly brutal touch that I didn't expect and indicates a lot of care was put into this thing, even though it sort of looks like Gauntlet.

I also really love the creative enemy design (which I won't spoil) and the writing seems ok so far with the expected levels of fatalism and sass from the player.

So, I don't know whether RoM2 or EI are better but the first one is a lot of fun and I'd recommend it for the price.

It is really nice to see people enjoy these games so many years after they were released. I've played them way back when they only came out and RoM 1-2 (aka Allods in original version) were some of my first RPGs.

As for which is better, they are rather different so it would depend on genres and elements you prefer.

RoM1 have noticeable element of strategy/tactic. The number of characters you would be able to control is relatively high, especially if we consider mercenaries.
RoM2 has similar gameplay but the accent is shifted towards RPG. You usually control less characters and it is more important to manage them properly. The game still has the same "soul" though, so if you liked RoM1 you will likely also enjoy RoM2.
Evil Islands (originally called "Проклятые земли", i.e. Cursed Lands) is very different. Its setting and lore are familiar but gameplay and mechanics are all new and distinct. The game is pure RPG with significant element of stealth gameplay.
