7th_Guest: anyone has the same problem?
Same situation here a few years later (2017). My actuel version of the Gog installer of the game is 2.3.0.8. As the game does not display its main menu, I am not able to check its own version. I have been trying various possible workarounds, such as changing screen resolution, with no success.
However there are two workarounds to get back in control:
1) CTRL + ALT + DEL gives you a way to switch back to the desktop, where you can then kill the game.
2) GoG's tech support proposed Alt + Enter key combination for toggling windowed mode from inside the game. At the time, it worked for me, made the game display back its main menu, and let me to setup its resolution back to that of the screen. For whatever reason, that workaround does not work anymore, as the bug appeared again lately.
I will report again the issue to tech support.

Here the hardware for making run the game is older, with no visible consequence on the gameplay or 3D rendering : P4 3.06 HT/430gt/2gb ram/win7 32bit
