I'm not completely new to this game series, its been FOREVER since I've played any of the games other than IV or V. I loved V because I could actually beat the darn thing without a guide, and I never got through any of the others because I only got to play them back in the day when I had dial up, and the only way I could get a guide while playing would be by printing it out....no way that ever happened since I was like 9 at the time I tried to play and my parents wouldn't let me use that much ink. I got into IV a bit, but never could beat it.

Now I have a tablet to look up guides, and the ability to tab out of the game to google a guide as well. I was thinking of starting up at the first game and trying to do a complete playthrough with the same character carried over. I've always wanted to do this as a kid, but never really had the chance. I loved playing a thief in IV and V because I could get the magic skill and still cast, but i'm starting to consider other options.

What should I start as? Should I just do a full run through as a thief? Is there plenty of sneaky content through all the games? I LOVE that class, but I'm just debating on changing to fighter for strength based puzzles. However a Mage sounds fun as well. I'm not really into the Paladin because by the time i get to V I want to be able to steal from the bank without feeling like I'm going against my character.

Also, should I start with the VGA version of 1 or the original?

Also any tips for this game would be awesome, I'm not completely new to them, but I know the puzzles & quests aren't exactly easy or obvious at times.

TL;DR
What class should I play, which game should I start with, any tips?

You like the thief, so a thief. You will be more comfortable in the VGA version of 1.

The puzzles have multiple solutions using the different classes skills. Your thief might not be able to brute force their way through a puzzle, but will have a different path they can take.

For tips. Don't read any walkthroughs/guides. I suspect you are a better gamer now then when you were nine.

I'm partial to thief, myself. If nothing else, they get to go places other classes can't. If you don't mind a little extra work, you can go a bit hybrid, (because it's expensive to start a non-class skill). I take magic for my thief, so that I can use zap, flame dart, and the like to help in combat. Calm is also nice.
I also heard that a fighter can take lockpicking and go thieving! Never tried it.

Fighter is definitely the easiest class, but I don't like easy. I feel this isn't a major spoiler, (spoiler alert, all the same), but the fighter is the only class that can become a paladin. So that's neat.

I don't really play wizard much, since I can't keep track of using only spells very well. Still, there's a lot of variety with them.

I agree with Gydion. Try playing without the guides. If you get intolerably stuck, well at least you have them to fall back on.

Biggest reason I dislike magic for my thief is the fact that he will get the aura spell instead of the amulet in QfG4, which you cannot cast in close combat. So some fights with the wraiths may be harder than I'd like, unless I train aura before it to last longer than 5 seconds.

Also possible, just like giving Fighter magic, or Magic User parry and/or lockpicking. Hybrids do work no matter the classes.

MadOverlord: but the fighter is the only class that can become a paladin.
Magic User can become a Paladin when you finish Trial by Fire. Thief can also become a Paladin, but you'll have to skip some of the thief part of the game.

Fighter is the only one that can become a Paladin in Wages of War though.

Beware playing with magic; if you do play a spellcaster, be prepared to grind not only your other skills, but the skill level for each spell individually, which can get especially tedious if you are multiclassing, which makes your other stats that much more important.
Oh, if you do play as a thief - it's worth taking the Parry skill... Otherwise you can't train with the weapon master.
