I'm just curious if it's worth buying this collection from gog.com. I still have my QFQ Anthology on CD which has 1-4 and the remake of QFG1. I also have QFG 5 too. What I am curious to know from those of you who have completed the games from gog is if the same bugs are still there. I remember there were a couple of issues with the games, for example, in QFG IV there were some dialog portions that were messed up or missing.

I have heard that some of these bugs have been fixed in this new release and I was just curious if anyone thinks it's worth buying again or if I should just stick to my CDs.

Also, one last question, does this use DOS Box or it's own emulator?

As far as I know, these do have the unofficial patches applied, so they should be as stable as they can. You could always apply them yourself and have an equivalent installation, though GOG.com does make it a bit more hassle free.
And they do use DosBox, not sure if it's still configured for Roland or not, since the setup has been updated in the last few days. Will be able to tell you more in ~12 hours.
You could always run them in ScummVM though.

Having installed the updated version, it appears that they're still configured for Roland by default (with one exception that is instead configured for Sound Blaster), but the default DosBox speed is now set to 10K rather than max/auto, which should solve the speed-related issues that people experienced.

I'm glad to hear that the games still use DOS Box as I could play these games on my MacBookPro. I was able to test the QFG 2 remake and it runs great. I'll be tempted to get the GOG.com collection now since I wouldn't' have to use the CDs anymore. I remember it being a pain in QFG4, waiting for the CD to warm up before I talked to characters. Sometimes the dialogue would skip because the CD took too long to spin up.

after replaying them all (using DOSbox) i HAD to buy this for part 5... WORTH IT! i just finished the game, for the first time, last night and i loved it! not the best in the series, but not the worst (im lookin at you #3).

it really pulls the story together, for the hero. GREAT ending for our beloved blonde boy :)


and yes, they use preconfigured DOSbox. if you have the CD, i really suggest cofiguring your own DOSbox and playing off that for parts 1-3. part 4 has lots of issues... GOG has it pretty well configured and does have the patch the anthology CD does not... with all the speed issues and not actually needing the CD in the drive for the voices (maybe this can be worked around mounting a virtual CD drive and copying the files, i didnt try that) makes the GOG version nice.

and retreiving your saved character files is a PITA with the GOG version, as it saves to a hidden file :( with my DOSbox, i had an A: mounted and easily retrieved my character files.


ok, all that being said: BUY IT!

The GOG version is a great value, and even though I owned all five, I picked this up as a digital backup. However, while the GOG versions (1-4) do use DOSBox, and have been patched, their configuration does not seem to be optimal. Whether or not you decide to purchase this set, the Sierra Help Pages has a number of installers (for owners of the disks) that automatically place the games in DOSBox, apply the unofficial patches, and set up really nice configurations. The only game that may be work better "out of the box" on the GOG version is QGV, which is a windows game. I have always had problems getting the QuickTime files to work optimally in V, and I have yet to see any mention of problems with these in the GOG version. In any case, it is great to have these wonderful games available again.
