I'm a thief (imported from QfG 1), and I am pretty good at magic & know the levitate spell. Are there any situations where I need the magic rope, and can't just use the levitate spell instead? That rope is pretty expensive.

Barring running out of mana, I can only think of one situation where you will need the rope. Given that that one situation is the endgame, however, I'd advise you to look into it if you start to get weighted down with money (which generally tends to happen in this game).
If you just can't stand the idea of buying the rope, and your magic is good enough that you've completed WIT, you'll also have the option of taking the wizard path in the endgame.

Money shouldn't be a problem after the first few days, especially considering the fact that you'll be getting at least 200 dinars for the elementals, plus the money from monsters, quests and stealing. Just make sure to get the final elemental reward when "Sunset Approaches" instead of "The Night is Still Young", so you can spend most of them in Shapeir, since you won't be needing that much cash in Raseir.
Thanks for the replies. I've already completed WIT, and I'm past the second elemental now.

I guess I'll see how much money I have towards the end of my stay in Shapeir. Right now I'd rather spend it on pills and stuff, but we'll see. Guess I'll get some cash when I finally manage to break into the weapons shop.
As an aside, I found that I could "bargain for rope", and he'd cut 10 dinars off the price. Better than nothing I guess.

I wouldn't worry too much about buying as many pills as you can. Don't get me wrong, buying pills is a good idea, but you will have highly limited use for them later on, and if you are planning on importing your character to QFG3, not all of the pills carry over (I think you get 5 of each no matter how many you have by the end).
I also need the X-Ray glasses.... :p

Remember to bargain for everything! never pay full price.

And ONLY bargain for things you think might help save the city until the last minute; the pragmatic citizens of Shapeir will give away critical items once they realize that refusing to turn it over will result in them dying.

Stamina pills do not carry over (since they don't exist in QfG3). All other pills do carry over, even in absurd amounts (120+ pills).

Also, don't forget to "Sell beard"
I can confirm now that with the spells at my disposal, I could take the mage path at the end and never needed the rope.

Since I bought the rope (as you guys said, I really did end up with way more money than I needed), I tried both the thief route and the mage route. The thief route is funnier, but the end part is not very good. On the other hand, the mage route contains some more enjoyable puzzles (in general, the magic puzzles are the best ones in the game).
