So I'm having a couple of different issues with QFG 5 crashing on me - not sure if they're related. I've done some digging, and it sounds like neither of these is new, but none of the solutions I've seen have worked for me:

-Exception error crash when fighting dragonlings - specifically at the northwest dragon pillar. Not that this is all that necessary, but it has me nervous as it feels like a problem that could be an issue with other fights later on. I've heard of a similar issue fighting the dragon at the end of the game caused by the fire-breath hitting the hero causing the game to try to make two different sounds at the same time and crashing it. This appears to be what's happening when I'm fighting the dragonlings too. The solution I've heard is to turn off the sound entirely for these scenes, but this has NOT helped with the dragonlings.

-direct crash to desktop without an error message whenever a random fight happens. I've read somewhere this is caused by using the magnets to leave a random battle scene, thus ruining all future random encounters. Is that really true? Is there no other solution than to hunt for whenever the hell I did that and play from there or simply to avoid all future random encounters??? Again, I've tried turning off the sound, but that didn't help.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Just discovered the QFG5 patcher and tried playing with it. Got both bugs again. The patcher's debugger didn't give me any info for the dragonling crash - just the game's usual "Exception error." The debugger DID give me info for the random encounter bug though - here's the info I had when it crashed:

Hi athon78! :)

Thanks for reaching out!
I have investigated the dragonlings crash, and the crash is actually caused by the sound, due to an issue directly related to the dragonlings and probably the dragon as well:
The 2 distincts sounds the dragons makes when spitting out (fire?) is launched many many times instead of just once.
And that is also why the sound is cluttering so bad when they breath fire: the sound is being played 15+ times, overlapping itself

I made a fix and it seems like it's not crashing anymore! :)
As a result from the fix, there will be no sound audible when those dragonlings attack.
I'll notify you in this thread once the QFG5Patcher fix will be published :)

As for the other issue, I am unable to reproduce it, and the fact it isn't triggering an exception makes this issue almost impossible to fix :(
Quick update!
I was able to reproduce the issue with athon78's help!
It turns out the 'bad' state causing the issue gets saved in the savegame, and this is really bad!

To make it simple, it crashes when trying to determine which room to load on an inland random encounter due to bad data!

I found a fix, it is now a matter of implementing it correctly within the QFG5Patcher.
With the fix, whenever a bad data is read, instead of crashing, it will load a specific random encounter room. Luckily, after the fix ran once, the state returns to normal and triggering a savegame will also fix the savegame!

I'll update you once the fix will be released :)

Cheers! ^^

A new version of QFG5Patcher (v1.0.1.19) containing the crash fix for the problem you have reported is now available :)

Just make sure you patch the "Fix known instabilities and crashes affecting gameplay" ^^
( I will move all those fix into their own customization option in a later revision :) )
Hi ubipred, I logged in just to say thank you so much for all the amazing work you do here :)

Thanks mate, you're a legend.
Wow! thanks buddy, much appreciated! ^^
Always sooo so thrilled to help improving QFG5’s user experience! :)
I also wanted to just say "thanks" again myself! After the fixes, I got a bit distracted by real life and hadn't played QFG5 in a long time. Finally got back to it recently and was able to complete with everything running smoothly! Thanks again for the awesome work!
Don't know if anyone is looking on here, anymore, but I have a weird bug that appears to be happening -

Spoiler, etc

Anyhow, in the final fight, when it goes to the second phase (when the dragon gets to 50% health and moves over into the cave area) it somehow restarts the timer from the first phase that causes the dragon to fly off in a very short period of time, making the game impossible to finish, as you simply can't damage the stupid reptile enough in that timeframe, even with maxed stats.

Anyone else have this problem, or is it just me?

Hello Ubipred,

First and foremost, thank you for creating this wonderful tool! I would be completely unable to play if it were not for this excellent patching tool. Thanks so much!

Secondly, i have a suggestion. While i was trying to use the patch, i ran it, ensured it was directed toward the correct installation folder, selected "English", and then "Compatibility fix".

This did not work. It took me about an hour of trying and re-trying before i noticed this tiny snippet of text in this thread:

This instruction REALLY needs to be made more prominent in the Github readme file. Once i selected it and pressed "Compatibility fix", it of course completely fixed all the problems i was having and my game has been faultless ever since, but if i had not seen this comment, i might never have worked out how to properly patch my game.

Could you please update the Readme.md to include instructions marking this checkbox before applying the patch?

In addition: While i was using QFG5Patcher to run my game, but before i had correctly applied the "fix known instabilities" checkbox, i was experiencing crashes on all random fighting encounters on Marete. The error response i was getting was:

Crash detected! - QFG5Patcher knowledge base

I almost gave up because of this message, figuring that the patch would not be able to help me. If possible, it might be good to update the patch to recognise that this particular crashing problem IS an identified issue, and CAN be fixed by applying the patch with the checkbox ticked as described above. I'm glad i didn't give up, but i very nearly did!

In conclusion, THANK YOU!!! Do you have a patreon, or a buy-me-a-coffee, or something like that? You deserve a donation :)
