I'm trying to get the ritual from the squid stone. I know the word to spell, and know all the variations most people suggest to get around the processor speed issue, but I still can't get the GOG version to give me the ritual. I found a few suggestions saying that you can click on the question mark enough times, and it will skip the puzzle (and the points), but there is no question mark, and I can click for hints until the cows come home and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

I remember one time when I played a version from Abandonia, I needed to make some changes in DosBox to make this work, but I can't remember what I needed to do and I can't find the information again. Does anyone know how to get past this? I've been trying to spell Avoozl for hours now.

[edit]

Never mind - I found it almost as soon as I posted this, as soon as I stopped searching for QFG4 specifically and just searched for slowing down CPU cycles in DOSbox. I dropped it to 2500 and the puzzle worked on the second attempt.

The keyboard commands for shortcuts are a good thing to write down. Sometimes tweaking the cycles is the only way past a bug in any number of these games. Most of them run optimally at 3000 but sometimes it helps to put them up or down.
I've had luck playing these with the following settings

core=simple
cputype=386_slow
cycles=2500

It may little sluggish at times but this is as close to the timing was on the 386 I originally played them on.
make a boot disk!

oh wait, wrong century.
for faster computers try typing

AVVOOOZZLL

just click on the letters in that order, and don't look at the dial :)
I'm gonna be trialling the ScummVM support for this game soon, so this is a part I'll be watching out for. I'll keep this place posted - I may actually really not like Hero-U, but this series is still fun.
