So it is possible to avoid the demon hounds the vampire dude sends after you and safely make it back to the town. It took a lot of reloading, but it's possible.

Then the game just went on with nothing happening. Anyone know if it's still possible to beat the game? Seems like I broke the story with no way to get inside the castle now.

It is possible, but the next time you go out/go near the castle at night, you should get caught and get taken in.
