So I was able to start the game alright, and can move from room to room fine in the city, but once I get out onto the world screen, it won't let me walk east to the next screen. No matter how I position my cursor, it just goes to the edge of the screen then takes me to the savannah screen (like I was camping).

Any ideas?

Try moving with the numpad on the world map. Exit the camp screen, then press 6 (or right arrow, I think it should also work). You should be able to continue moving east.
It might also be a matter of it's too soon in the plot - the game won't let you leave the first world screen in the first couple of days because the plot requires you to be at Tarna on the dawn of the third day.

As far as the savannah screen goes, that always happens whenever you come to a full stop without encountering any events. It's the only way to encounter some easter eggs, too.
