I don't want to be spoilered by reading walkthroughs, so here's my question: is there anything specific I should do in QFG2 to get started? Or do I have to wait for certain timed events to begin? I'm in day 3 now, and I don't have anything left to do it seems, except train and fight in the desert. Is there a place in the desert I should be exploring right now?

I'm a mage user, and have meanwhile become a wizard, and bought a few things, but that's basically it.

The major events happen on specific days. If you're on day three then the first one isn't due for a couple more days, and there'll be another one every few days after that. You can do whatever you want in the meantime; training and talking to NPCs (they'll sometimes have new things to say) are the main activities between crises, but there'll occasionally be other things to do on specific days.

As a magic-user, you have another initial task in Shapier: find WIT and pass its examination to become a Wizard. If you have all of the required spells (everything except Reversal and Zap - though you'll probably also have Zap by now) then you can get started by casting Detect Magic while in the city's alleyways. (It won't work in the plazas.)

If you've already done that then work on your spell skills and talk to NPCs. If possible, try to visit the guild each morning and the inn each evening. There'll occasionally be visitors or other guests.
