So I was streaming myself playing QFG2 for the first time. I was able to change my currency and buy the map and compass. I found the magic, achothacary, and weapons shops as well as the adventurer's guild. I didn't bother exploring every nook and cranny of the maze like hallways though.

I ventured out into the desert and literally speant an hour getting nowhere other than dying to enemies and finding a griffin and a tree in the shape of a lady (which I poored water on).

It became nightfall so I tried being a thief and breaking into the shops but they're all barred from the inside.

So ya. I'm lost on where I'm even supposed to go here. I don't want spoilers or an entire walkthrough but I'd really appreciate it if I was given a little guidance on where I'm actually supposed to go. I'm assuming the desert just goes on endlessly without telling you that it's looping.

There are a few places out in the desert (besides the griffon and tree), but only one of them is really meaningful at this stage and one of the NPCs can give directions when it comes up. The griffon and tree will be important again later.

It sounds as though you're playing as a Thief. If you've got other abilities then there may be more for you to do, but in the meantime you might want to re-visit the moneychanger - that's where you get the "thief jobs" in this game.

Otherwise, you're probably best off to stick to town for a while. Visit the Guild every day and have a spar with Uhura. There may occasionally be something else happening out front.

The first crisis will arrive after a few days have passed; you're pretty much free to train up until that happens (and should do so).

Thanks for the advice. Didn't realise I had to wait for the game to start for me :( Guess I'll grind up until the big event occurs then :D
