Hello all,

It's been months hasn't it? RL issues just keep cropping up. I'm excited to announce that I'm finally back in some capacity.

I've been able to upgrade to an i7 and Windows 10 OS (was using Win7 before). Bought the GoG release of King's Quest and Quest for Glory, so now the game files can be accessed with the ease of digital platforming. And I've updated my version of SCI Companion, which resolved many of the decompiler errors.

Out of curiosity, I started experimenting with the VGA version of QFG1 a.k.a. Hero's Quest. It's always irked me (and I'm sure many people) that the final song refuses to play under Roland MT-32 or General MIDI output. Well guess what? It turns out that Sierra actually shipped the game without MIDI data for the closing medley! Yeah, it's true. You can read the file for yourself.

So I sat down and thought: wait... why don't we just use the EGA song? It's the same song composed for the MT-32. Thus began an entire week of doing research and attempting to extract this song to play in-game. And I believe we've finally succeeded.

Just drop the 99.SND file into your main game directory. It should be compatible with any version in any language, since it's just overriding a song track. Unfortunately, the Adlib track will not work with this patch. I've tried remapping the channels to 1~9 and even 2~10, but it just refuses to play. If you want to hear the final song in Adlib again, just delete this file.

After 30 years, you can finally hear the ending to the VGA game, the way that it was always meant to play!
Um...to be clear: by "song," we are talking about the music (a variation on the QFG theme) that plays during tne end sequence of QFG1, right?

Sorry, it's just that I primarily use the word "song" to refer to a short musical piece that generally includes sung lyrics. This has me thinking more of something "Girl in the Tower" for KQ6. (True...Felix Mendelssohn once released a piano collection called Songs Without Words...)

Yep! That's the one. It's more of a medley isn't it? xD

I'm sorry, but by "that's the one" you meant the music at the end of QFG1? It's been over a year since I played, but is that music a medley?

(Or were you referring to "Girl in the Tower" or Songs Without Words?) Can you please clarify?

The music at the end of QFG1. I believe that it fits the definition of a medley? (a piece of music combining tunes or passages from various sources). Since it uses passages from several other tracks, such as the main theme, battle theme, Erana's Peace, and the QFG2 intro. Apologies for the confusion.

Sorry. I should have read your OP a little more carefully.
Could you help me to navigate github? When I click your link, all I see is a zip file called "QFG1-Fixes-main.zip" with a file called "test."

I don't see the 99.SND file you are referring to.

Hello bliznik,

I know GitHub's new design is confusing. When you navigate to the link, here should be a section called Releases on the right side of your screen. There should only be one release there called "QFG1 VGA Finale Song MIDI Fix". You can download the zip under Assets.
