You can pick your nose.
I'm not kidding. Just remember to save your game before you try, because there's a chance you can shove it up your nose so hard you'd die.
Go to the healer's hut and pick the door for a bit.

You won't open it, but you will train your skill up. Once it stops raising, you can pick your nose without fear of death
In Quest for Glory 1, you can train your lockpick skill up to 100, but you need to find a safe place and time to train without attracting the attention of the sheriff.

You can use lockpick on yourself to "train" your lockpick skill, (i.e., by picking your nose.) However, if your lockpick skill is lower than 40, you have a chance of killing yourself when you pick your nose. If your lockpick skill is better than 40, you can safely train your lockpick skill by picking your nose.
Okay.

I must just have been unlucky since I tried like 5 times to pick my nose and I died each time.

I tried to pick the lock of the Healers and it just say something about its not locked... the door is barred.

Okay I will keep trying to pick my nose for success!

(there is a phrase you don't hear every day)
Use your lockpick on the door of the healer's hut just outside the town. Train your Pick Locks skill to about 40.

Then, you can safely use your lockpick on yourself (i..e, pick your nose) to improve you lockpick skill. If you tried that with less than 40 in Pick Locks, you could kill yourself.

Picking your nose would NOT be able to raise your Pick Locks over 91 or 92. After that, you would need to lockpick the houses in the town to get the skill up to 100, the maximum in the first game. Try picking the doors on the same screen as the tavern, (the butcher's and baker's doors with the notes posted on them,) the door at the end of the street, and the two doors in the next screen to the right, (the sheriff's home and the dry good store.) Try moving and switching around when you are lockpicking those doors, (i.e., pick a door, and then the next door, and then the third door, and then go back to the first door, etc..) If you repeatedly pick the same door too many times, the sheriff will arrest you.
maybe picking the door to the healers hut doesnt work in the version I have since when I try to pick the lock to her door I get the following message.

"You lock-picking skill will do you no good here. The door is barred from the inside."

So I cant pick the door to the Healers Hut no matter what.
IIRC, it should still raise your skill. Either it's a bug, or you are successfully picking the lock but failing to gain entry due to the bar on the other side.

Lockpicking the healer's door would raise your skill only when your skill was below 62 or so. After that, you would have to pick your nose to raise it to 80 or 90.

I seem to recall that by attempting to pick any lock raises your skill. With the EGA version, I remember just repeatedly trying to pick the locks on the houses I wanted to rob until my skills got good enough to get it done. I don't recall ever having to actually train beforehand.
