JKHSawyer: http://quake.wikia.com/wiki/DOSBox

I'm running the DOS version with dynamic set to the core, and a fixed cycles of 200000. It runs smoothly at 640x480, which is honestly as high as you need to go with Quake before it gets redundant.
Thanks a lot for this tip! And yes, 640x480 is absolutey adequate for playing Quake. Especially such old classics look best when they are close to the original.
You should move to qbism or quakespasm to use a modern engine wrote by people that agree with you about how the game should look best.

GreatBearAttack: It seems like if I run the DOS version of Quake at anything higher than 320X200, the performance suffers. If I go to a resolution that's significantly higher, the game becomes unplayable. Is there a way to fix this?
Here unzip this https://reep.io/d/0iy9xpworz and copy it into your

X:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Quake

where X:\ is your drive letter eg C:\

so C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Quake

doubledamagexx: went to my "dosbox_quake" config and changed cycles to max. I get to about 1024x768 before i start having issues. Anything higher and it seems slow, or crashes.
use this - Click Here (it's clean and the same link above) you can set it all the way to the resolution 1152x864

You can't run this game with good performance if your monitor support only 60 hz... Quake1 (and all DOS games) uses 70 hz of refresh and a cap of 72 fps and can stutter with 60hz

Doom (that has a cap of 35 fps) will stutter with 60 hz

All DOS games works fine only with 70 hz of refresh and more (MS-DOS was using only 70 hz)

Only few DOS games run at 60 fps

It works fine also with 144 hz (and also with 120fps, but is not recommended)

remember to use DOSBox 0.74-2

for cpu cycles use these https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Performance
