Like many of you know Quake requires you to collect one rune from each episode to access the final boss. Problem is that when I die and restart the level the runes I have collected disappear. I tested with the dos version, opengl and the Quakespasm sourceport.

So is there is solution for this beside careful managing my savefiles?

According to the QuakeWiki this is an old bug that never got resolved, not even in most source ports, maybe for savegame compatibility reasons.

As you correctly noticed, it only happens when you die and restart a level. However, it will not happen if you load a savegame. So, the best way to prevent it from happening is to save at the beginning of each level, and upon dying just load that savegame instead of relying on the restart.

If it has already happened to you and you don't have a save, you can open the ingame console (by pressing ^ or ~ key on your keyboard) and type in impulse 11, which is said to give you back 1 rune. If you've lost more, you need to close the console first and then redo the process until you've got them all back.

Thank you!
This is the very bug that prevented me from completing the game when I first played it, 20+ years ago. But I hadn't Syrion suggesting me a workaround back then... I was experiencing the same problem yesterday, on my second replay after all these years, so I searched on the forum and found this thread. I've managed to finish the game this time. Thank you!
