I bought the CD versions of quake (and both mission packs) back in the day, but unfortunately lost the main Quake CD - and was pretty happy finding I could grab the entire pack, with CD images, here on GOG for $10.

However, it would seem that the CD images have been incorrectly ripped, for Quake as well as both mission packs: the audio tracks are a bit off, having the first few starting seconds of a succeeding track at the end of the preceding track. This is true regardless of which virtual-cd application I've tried, it happens when extracting the tracks with IsoBuster, and after burning with ImgBurn and ripping with EAC.

It's also apparent when running under DosBOX: if you do "cd play 2" (to stop looping) and let the track play all the way to the end, you'll get the first few seconds of track 3... and it's true (and very noticable) for all the original Quake audio tracks. Now, as stated above, I don't have the original Quake CD to compare with, but I do have the mission packs.

A lot of the tracks on the mission pack CDs have start- and end-track silence, so it's not as apparent here, but it's noticable on at least the first two track of Dissolution of Eternity - and the problem isn't there with rips from my original mission pack CDs.

I guess the image file itself is fine, with just the CUE files being imperfect.

Is there any chance that this error can be corrected? Or don't you (GOG) have access to the physical discs anymore?

I have no idea what could have led to this, but I would think that the CD data is fine and it's just a question of incorrect track indexes. If you're happy with an approximate fix, you could probably just edit game.cue with a text editor and some patience.

The units are MINUTES:SECONDS:FRAMES, with 75 frames to every second.

EDIT: I just gave it a try. Subtracting two seconds from each of the INDEX lines below TRACK 03 AUDIO seems to result in all the songs ending with just a bit of silence and none of the beginning of the next track. They also start pretty immediately, perhaps a third second wouldn't hurt.

I noticed that I didn't quote you at all, so I thought I'd add another post in case you missed my post.

I would add that I wouldn't hold my breath for an official fix. GOG.com was already told by a rights holder to either remove the audio tracks from glquake or to remove the entire game! While the current CD rip has apparently given the go-ahead, they may need to ask again if they modify it. When the results are uncertain and precedent bad, they might not want to rock the boat. This is all pure conjecture, of course.
I initially noticed with the expansion packs that the 1st bit of every music track was missing. I see now this makes sense, as they are at the end of the track before it... :S

How exactly can this be fixed? I think I still have the 1st installer of GOG's Quake, and my music tracks are .ogg files, for both the DOS and Win versions. I also don't see a game.cue file, just a game.inst that is the cue sheet, but that just points to the .oggs. I assume there is no other way to fix it than to re-rip all the tracks from the original disc or image?

As explained few posts ago, you have to edit the cue sheet.

Yeah, thanks. It was confusing, as I have an early download from GOG which already includes ripped-to-ogg audio, but these were ripped with the same incorrect offset. The new version does not come with these .oggs, but does come with the disc image and cue sheet- to get music working in the Windows version (or a port) I'll need to install the current version, adjust the cue sheet and rip the tracks to .ogg myself.

Yes. It is rather unfortunate actually, but it is the only lawful way.

After you edited the .cue sheet you might find useful those guides: or [url=http://www.gog.com/forum/quake_series/my_oneclick_audioextractor]windows.

Right, so I've been having trouble replying here - will have to see if I can figure out what's wrong with the content of the post. But since this went through, obviously I *can* reply :)

--- here we go --- :)

Right, found the problem - the quote block starts with "quote_*postnumber*", but must be closed with "quote". Post window just goes "processing, please wait" instead of indicating there's an error, boo hiss.

Yep, the CD data is most likely just fine - a bit hard to verify without frame-perfect indices, though :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the error is exactly 2 seconds, given the 2-second pregap present in all three of the cuesheets - however, from my original missionpack CDs, ImgBurn produces a CUE sheet where the first audio track has pregap, and the rest have INDEX00 + 01.

It would be really nice of GOG could supply us with perfect images - I know it's a lot to ask for at this price and the legal issues that seem to be surrouding the audio, but still. The game deserves it!

I wonder if the mission pack CDs GOG ripped from have exactly the same content as mine - in that case, I could probably supply CUE sheets for them... I don't think that would be a violation of copyright? And it seems that a friend of mine still has the original Quake CD, so at least I'll be able to get bit-perfect rips. It's a shame if it won't be available (legally) to everybody else, though :(

While I am not sure you can post the complete .cue file, I am sure you can post the diff.
after some checking into my (.cue) files it looks like the "offset" issue only affects
"game" (Quake) & "gamed" (Dissolution of Eternity) & not "gamea" (Scourge of Amagon)

& for quake subtracting 0:02:25 seems to be about right though I have not tried it with DoE yet

Getting an error free product doesn't seem too much to ask, I think. It's just the right amount. At least two of the cue sheets have incorrect track timings for the in-game audio, based on the reports here (I've only verified the Quake cd image myself). The Dosbox version of the game mounts the disk images using the cue files, so the audio tracks heard in-game are incorrect. This is a configuration error that affects gameplay (specifically the audio). It seems perfectly reasonable to expect an update at some point with corrected cue files, so that fresh installs don't require extra fiddling to get the game music to play correctly as in the original.

yeah, I dug out my old Quake106 CD & ripped into it & it's CUE looks completely different from the GOG version enough so that I decided to buy the mission packs on CD (it was cheaper to get them as a set) in part to compare them as well

The comparison would have to be made specifically for the "Quake: The Offering" version of the CDs, otherwise it's apples and oranges. Poking around on freedb.org I found 4 or 5 different versions of the Quake CD (before I stopped looking), all different in length due to variation in the size of the game data track. The only one close was Disc-ID 9711020b with a total time of 72:30. I'm sure multiple variants of the mission pack CDs exist as well. The number and length of the audio tracks are all just about the same across the different versions, but their starting positions differ, so the resulting CUE/TOC data wouldn't match the GOG version.

TL;DR: Trying to find a comparable CUE/TOC to correct the GOG cues was a waste of time. I ended up just manually tweaking them (game.cue and gamed.cue - gamea.cue didn't need it) until they seemed right. As posted elsewhere, the correction is -2 seconds for all audio tracks. NOTE: Except the first (track 2 in the CUE), which seems to have a correct start time already due to the 2 second pregap. Subtracting 2 seconds from the start time on that track ends up adding 2 seconds of the data track to the start (based on playback of the mounted disk image using VLC). Only tracks 3 and up needed adjusting.

Taking into account every person who buys the game and expends the effort for the audio to be correct adds up to a lot of wasted time that accurate cue files could save.

For everyone, can you share the fixed .cue sheet? (Of course, not the .bin file)

Sure. Edit the 'config files' game.cue and gamed.cue with a text editor (after backing up the originals) so the INDEX times match those below.
