I've got a bunch of old computers that I'm networking together so I can run some LAN games of some old shooters.
I decided to install the GOG versions of Quake and Quake 2 since they have more content than the versions I still have on the original CDs. (Plus Quake 2 requires the CD, and i only got one.) I installed them onto the first computer, and right away I found they won't launch.
Please note that the versions I installed straight off of the original CD works fine. (Well, obviously I have to run GLQuake instead of the DOS Quake 1, but still.) It also runs Quake 3, UT, and UT2004 all just fine, so this shouldn't be an issue with my machine not set up properly. (And Quake 3 and UT are the GOG versions as well.)

When I launch Quake 2, I get the dialogue box that lets me select which version I want to play, but when I try to launch the game I get the generic error message "quake2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." And offers to send an error report. This also happens when I try to run it in safe mode.

When I try to launch Quake 1, the screen resolution drops to something horribly low and gives me the error message "wglCreatContect failed"

this is running in windows XP with a Pentium D and some on-board intel graphics.
