I only own Quake 2 on GOG and not Steam but played Quake 2 RTX on Steam. The program will use ANY Quake 2 installation, not just a Steam installation. Quake 2 RTX not being on GOG for years is not really the same kind of issue as the lack of the Night Dive remaster on GOG.

If they would post the expansion's it comes with we could easily just use the vanilla or enhanced darkplaces engines to run/play it.
Not like Nightdive would bother with a linux port anyway. Or better, have the engine open source.

I'm very happy remaster. The nice underwater-effect is finally back in the Kex-Engine and it looks really good. I never liked glquake with missing this effect.
I'd recommend people back up their files in case they do decide to give us the remaster. They offer a Quake 64 port, which is neat, but the remaster is infested with Bethesda.net garbage. You can't play online without it either.

Post by Grargar, Steam games you can play without the Steam client

The new version of Quake (more info here) will launch and save without the client, by placing a steam_appid text file with the number 2310 in the game's folder (path is Quake/rerelease).

Note: You might need to launch the game once on Steam before it works. At least for me, it constantly froze while trying to load an episode before doing that.

Tested on Windows 10.

Yeah, that sounds like DRM to me. You can technically play games with Denuvo DRM offline, as long as you run the DRM once. That wasn't even my point, though, it's that you have to make a Bethesda account to access multiplayer, so if that service ever gets deactivated the online portion goes with it.

Excuse me, Steam recognize it as a native game? Does Steam update the RTX version automatically? Or just you have made Steam to run the .exe?

Thanks in advance.
I myself have been able to solve my doubt, you simply have to download Quake II RTX on Steam and open, direct it to the base game files, in my case those of GOG, and install it. The wonderful thing is that in Steam it is kept up to date and you can even see the news of the updates just below the game page, which of course does not happen in GOG Galaxy, what an embarrassment and pity.
I noticed that the Enhanced version has been added to GOG and my library in the meantime. Nice! Does anyone know if the Enhanced version features all of the music again that I've heard is missing from the original version on GOG?
