I recently installed quake 2, but I cannot get it to run smoothly. In vanilla Quake 2 I get exactly 83 FPS. Changing the resolution does not change the FPS I get. In Quake 2 XP I get around 24. If I lower the resolution from 4K to 1080p I get around 40. Turning all the visual stuff off adds about 5-10 FPS to that.
And I don't understand why. I am running it on a laptop with a 7700HQ, a Radeon 560 4GB graphics card and 16GB of ram.
Things that I tried so far:
- Updating my graphics card drivers, no effect
- Reinstalling Quake 2. I briefly got 250 FPS when I turned 8 bit textures off, but then when I installed Q2XP again hoping the problem had solved itself, I got the same low framerates in both XP and vanilla.
- tinkering with the config file. I tried adding set r_primitives "2", no effect.
- the frame rate cap is 600fps
- limiting the game to one CPU core. no effect
- running clockblocker to prevent my GPU from idling. no effect
The weird thing is Quake 3 Arena runs like a dream, in 4K with 16x AF and 8x MSAA.
So why $#%@$@#$# can't I get Q2 to do the same?
Can you guys help me out?
