Okay, I've got Quake on my system. Win 7 Home Premium. Really would like to change the resolution from the default.

I see the call is to glquake. I tried putting in various commands to change res; only managed to crash the game.

So is there a way to do this without having to use any outside programs? And if I get it to work, will the change also show in the two Mission packs (Scourge and Dissolution)?

Thanks for all replies.

There are problems with changing resolutions in GLQuake on modern hardware unfortunately. You can launch WinQuake (the .exe file is in the same folder). It allows you to change the resolution, but this way you won't have access to widescreen resolutions. Your best shot will be to download a sourceport. The closest to original is QuakeSpasm: http://quakespasm.sourceforge.net/download.htm . It has full support of modern hardware and allows you to play the game in widescreen resolutions. Just download it and unpack the sourceport to your Quake 1 folder. Now launch the game through quakespasm.exe.

Quakespasm is kinda outdated now. Better use the improved Quakespasm-Spiked or vkQuake (if your GPU supports Vulkan). Both ports have many advantages compared to Quakespasm (e.g. support for higher framerates without breaking physics).

Thanks. I called Winquake instead and res is fine now. I have a square monitor, so this works for me. Made note of the Spasm for future reference.

Thanks for all the replies.
Today the easiest way to play with the desired resolution + a lot of extras is to use Ironwail (a fork of QuakeSpasm).
From v0.7 it autodetects your GOG installation.
