Hello Fellow GOG Users,

I'm running into this issue when playing Psychonauts 2, where I randomly encounter the attached error and have to close the game and reopen to play. This can happen frequently, within minutes of starting, or I can sometimes get an hour or two before it crashes again.

Looking around online I found a few suggestions for fixing the error. I have tried restarting the PC, verifying the game files via GOG Galaxy 2.0, clean installing both the game and my graphics card driver, setting the .exe to run as admin, adding it to my AV whitelist, and reducing resolution and graphics settings. I even tried using the shortcut to the .exe and the Psychonauts2-Win64-Shipping.exe in the games Binaries folder to see if any of them would run better. No dice so far. Thus far the only other solution I have seen online is to force the game to run with DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 12, but this only appears to be possible in Steam. I also saw a post on this forum by user squareinc that suggested the following:

Find the game and right-click the shortcut exe (not the main one), then select Properties.
Under the Shortcut Tab, you should see the Target field with the directory path of the main exe.
Leave the path alone, but type in the dialox box at the end of the target string -force-d3d11 and click OK.
Close the Properties window.
Run the game through the shortcut.

This did not work either as the system would not allow me to select a path that didn't actually exist in the game files.

At this point I'm really not sure what my options are. I can't run the game through DirectX 11 and all other options have failed to stabilize the game. I can't imagine it would be my hardware, I have an RTX 2070 and a Ryzen 9 3900X, as well as 16 gb of RAM. Running on Windows 10, purchased through GOG Galaxy 2.0. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. If not, well...I guess I'll just keep playing in short bursts.

Thanks!

Is there no solution to this problem?

I'm encountering a consistently repeating LowLevelFatalError which has made progress impossible. Thanks for the support Double Fine!

Edit: To the devs: please support your players on GOG! Do we need to post on the Steam forum for it to be read?

I should add that it is possible that the directions I found to force the game to launch with DirectX11 were misunderstood. I'm somewhat inexperienced as a PC gamer.
So, I've been continuing to mess around with this issue, even though I got pissed off and requested a refund from GOG. What I discovered today may be of use to anyone else with this issue so...

In my above post, I referenced a post by user squareinc, wherein they laid out instructions for forcing a GOG game to run with DirectX 11. I stated that it did not work, but it looks like, being a noob, I misunderstood. In order to force Psychonauts 2 to run with DirectX 12, one must follow these instructions from user squareinc. My edit for noobs will be in boldface.

Find the game files and right-click the shortcut exe (not the main one), then select Properties.
Under the Shortcut Tab, you should see the Target field with the directory path of the main exe.
Leave the path alone, but type in the dialox box at the end of the target string -force-d3d11 and click OK. (copy and paste -force-d3d11 outside the quotation marks)
Close the Properties window.
Run the game through the shortcut.

This appeared to resolve the issue and resulted in a session with no interruptions. However, merely an hour after this discovery, my refund request was finalized and I lost access to the game, so I am unable to test this any further. It is my hope that posting this information will help any future GOGlings trying to enjoy Psychonauts 2, but I wish I could test further to be certain.
Hello,

i have had the same issue on the steam version of the game after messing around with the ingame settings.
There seems to be some kind of issue with v-sync and high refresh rate displays. I am not quite sure what causes the error though. The previously mentioned -dx11 fix didn't work in my case.

Anyway, i was able to fix the error by doing the following:

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Navigate to C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local.
3. Rename the folder "Psychonauts2" to "Psychonauts2_".
4. Restart the game.

A new folder with the default settings will be created and the game should run fine again.

Enjoy!
