I have the problem where my R2 and L2 buttons are bound to the opposite Psi powers actions (R2 is labeled L on the HUD while L2 is labeled R). I've searched here and on the Steam forums for fixes and such and found nothing related.

I also found out that Steam Overlay outright refuses to work with the GOG version of Psychonauts and thus won't let me use custom bindings in Big Picture.

Also, I can't change my bindings in-game when I have a controller connected for some reason. Whenever I click on a binding, nothing happens that allows me to change anything. It only works when I have just m/kb.

I would like to avoid using programs that bind keyboard commands to the controller unless there is no other option.

You could try editing the controller bindings in your profile .ini file.

The .ini is a simple text file and is located in <gamepath>\Profiles\Profile <#>\.

Forgot to mention that in my post. I also tried editing the .ini but it also swaps the icons in the in-game HUD, rendering the "fix" useless.

I also tried the Psychopad fix found here on the forums, but that didn't do anything to help either. I'm out of ideas.

You can change button-icon assignment in
<path-to-game>\WorkResource\Textures\Icons\UI_Icons\IconPrefsPC.ini.
(look for the button names matching the ones from your profile.ini bindings)

That did the trick!
In case anyone else has the same problem and needs help, let me explain how it can be fixed for PS4 controller users.

The problem is that the HUD icons for Psychonauts are unchanged from the original Xbox version of the game and they didn't match the buttons on my PS4 controller. To some people, like me, this is an immersion ruining bug. However, this can be completely fixed and the game will look as if it were made for 360 controllers. (Better yet, you can change the icons to anything you want!)***

First, get the PsychoPad patch found here on the forums if you haven't already. Download link will be on the second page of the thread. This patch will change all of the icons to a 360 scheme (this does not change the icons' filenames). Follow the instructions of that patch.

I also recommend you get VTFEdit to help you.

Next, go to your Psychonauts install folder:

konpeki: <path-to-game>\WorkResource\Textures\Icons\UI_Icons\IconPrefsPC.ini.
Open IconPrefsPC.ini and scroll down to the section that starts with Joy1 on the left side. This section is where the problem is. Each button on the controller (labeled Joy1-12 is what this game actually uses) is linked to an icon file that is found in the folder called XI_Icons which is next the the folder where IconPrefsPC.ini is located. The corresponding icon file is what will be shown in-game. That being said, you can change which icons will represent the buttons.

If you want to know which icon is which before you do anything, use VTFEdit to view the icons. After associating the .tga file extension with VTFEdit, just open the icon file and click "ok" on the menu that pops up.

Once you know which icons you want to switch around, find the Joy# in IconPrefsPC.ini that corresponds to the button on your controller. Go to the end of the line where the icon's filename is and cut (ctrl-x) and paste the filename next to the binding you want to swap. Cut and paste the other filename in the same place. Rinse and repeat until you're satisfied with your icons.

Test them in-game!

***I think you might actually be able to use any sort of icon imaginable, just so long as link the correct filenames in IconPrefsPC.ini, but that's just a guess on my part. I'm not knowledgeable enough in that realm to verify such claims. Still will be cool as shit to replace all the icons in the game with penises lol
