Does anyone use a usb controller that is not an xbox controller. I have a logitech and it doesn't seem to work in this game.

I have a Logitech Playstation Controller - I will give it a try and get back to you.
Just plugged it in fired up the game and its working fine. Its a USB Logitech PS2 Dual Shock. Picked it up at Gamestop for $12.00.

I've played Psychonauts using a Logitech Dual Action gamepad on both Windows XP and Windows 7.
Check to make sure you can see the controller in the Windows Control Panel ("Game Controllers" in XP, "Devices and Printers" in Windows 7). If it shows up, it should work.

Problem fixed! Had to uninstall drivers for Belkin razor pad. Now Logitech gamepad works fine.
