I have fixed the sound issue on my Linux Mint 19.3 and 18, by doing the following step, it is really easy.

to fix the sound issue all you have to do is go to the game installation folder,
usually installed here:
/home/<your user name here>/GOG Games/Psychonauts/game

look for a file named "libopenal.so.1" and deleted it.

you are all done, your game sound issue should now be fixed and the game will be working flawlessly,

note this fix will probably work on other Linux distributions. This fix was suggested by someone else to fix the sound on Arch Linux, although for them the fix required one more step.

Edit: this game works better on Linux than it does on windows.

Confirmed on newest Manjaro, thank you! I think that GOG team should investigate this, Maybe this file is out of date or just unnecessary.
